C2 (64) Tail Light and Back Up Light Gaskets

I bought a set of repros and also checked catalogs recently and what I find is made of darker cork material. Mine are dirty but originally white. I may not remember this right but I recall a conversation with Steve Hack or Eastern Corvettes who told me thay should be white, that the dark ones were overly visible, expicially through the clear back up lenses.

Does anyone know what is right and, if white is right, where can I get them?

All my original parking light gaskets (front & rear) are a light (white) cork style gasket, at least on one Mar64.
Also note the screws are magnetic, ie not stainless.

I am a March 64 car, but all of my lights have been replaced, so notheing is original there. Thanks for the information.

From original poster. I pulled one of my back up lenses today. They color is really light grey and not white. The material is cork and it is possible that the coloration is a transfer of aluminum oxidation from the housing. What doesn't make sense is that it is on both sides of the gasket. I spoke with Steve Hack (Eastern Corvettes) today and he said that the brown mottled cork is correct.

Larry, as I mentioned above "light (white) cork style gasket" was just a stab at a description to say they are not dark.
Know I purchased a few repo and they were black (dark) and originals are not. If needed I can take a picture for you. (tomorrow)
Remember the rear lights have a white wick at the bottom, also.

Now the front parking lights seem to be a different story. Since you inquired I did check an original gasket that appeared to be somewhat black. First though was that is was just dirty from 45 years of use however after cleaning (very mild cleaner) I found what seems to be a black coating on the gasket both front & back.

Alan, your left one in the picture is beginning to show some signs of picking up aluminum oxidation like mine on both sides. These gaskets appear to be in good shape. Have they been replaced?

Mine are hard and broken...and grey on both sides.

How is it picking up aluminum oxidation? I thought the housings were pot metal. This should be zinc oxide.
