Thank you very much. That sures clears up a lot. I guess I was assuming that A.O. Smith just built bodies and shipped thiem to St. Louis for assembly.
Can you tell me at what stage the Trim Tag was stamped and put on the car in Ionia? We this just before shipping?
    Dale -

That's correct - A.O. Smith built the body, painted it, and trimmed it just enough to keep water out of it during rail shipping to St. Louis - here's an article I wrote that covers the A.O. Smith operation in Ionia:

A.O. Smith installed the trim tag after paint, in their Trim Shop, just as St. Louis did.

My car has one door with the raised pad and one door without. Did that happen or did someone replace my door with a newer one? My build date is G23.

My second question is about my seat track. I'm recovering the seats. I removed the seat track release lever so I can strip the frame. I want to polish the handle. As best as I can tell it is not a chrome plated handle, it is solid chrome (I had to drill out the set screw). Is it solid chrome or is it plated?

      Thank you for your help.
Frances, my early 64 has doors like yours, one with a pad and one without. I knew that both were supposed to have pads and after careful examination of the inside of the door without one, I could see evidence of a repair.

The release handles are chrome plated pot metal. There are several platers who can replate these for you.

Thank you very much. You've all been helpful. I am going to fix my drivers door so it has a raised pad.
