67' Still trying to remove interior heater box; HELP

I currently have the heater fan motor and exterior heater box on engine side removed. I can see the heater coil. I can pull the interior heater box out from the firewall so the studs are no longer going thru the firewall, but I can only pull it back so far before it hits the frame support bar; the bar that the vin tag is rivoted to. the interior heater box is also still resting on the heater coil by the time it hits the frame support bar. thus I have no further room for the interior heater box to drop down. How does this interior heater box come out?

    Dave -

Have you removed the nut from the firewall stud on the car centerline forward of the radio? Ref. Assembly Manual, UPC 1-Asm, sheet D6, item #4, "Note - drive this nut first".

Its been awhile since I have removed one. If I recall, there is a nut and bolt over the accelerator pedal area that must also be removed. Did you remove that one? With it in place you can pull out the box in the glovebox area but not remove it Once done I believe just tipping it a bit allows for it to come right out. Hopefully, others will chime in.

        John,
I'm not sure exactly what you are referencing? I have the heater and blower assembly removed from the engine bay side; thus i can see the heater coil. However, when I'm on the interior side and pull back the interior heater box, the box hiits the frame support bar before it can clear the heater coil. I see the diagram in the manual you referenced.

          Bob,
the one photo I showed is of the left side of the heater box near the gas pedal. It is showing the bolt that i believe you are referring to. the nut is removed. There must be a piece to the puzzle i'm missing??

            Dave,

In your second photo it looks like the floor diffuser is still attached. If you didn't, you must remove that to get more clearance. IIRC, there are two screws holding it in.

This allows you to drop the main box downward some more then tilt to remove.

I just reread your post and realized that you say the box won't clear the heater core(your term "coil")...........

The heater core should be attached to the inner box, held in with a rectangular plate using small hex screws. I think a prior may have replaced the heater core once and not attached it properly to the inner box.

See if you can pull the core towards the box to give you more movement.

Pics below shows a 67 inner box with the core still installed and the rectangular ring to hold it to the box. The metal plate is hidden by the rectangular seal. The entire box and core comes out as an assembly and is serviced on the bench to remove the core.

Edit......The 3rd pic shows 2 flat push nuts that hold the rectangular plate to the box. Those 2 U shaped clamps hold the core ends to the plate. The core/plate is inserted into the box, then the push nuts go on the studs to hold the plate/core assembly to the box. Maybe the prior didn't install the push nuts over the studs to hold the core assembly to the box.

                  Richard,
Thank you for the pics and advice. I believe you are on to something here. Currently the innner box moves freely away from the firewall but the heater core is still attached. So maybe it is stuck against the firewall; rust, etc. Some prior owner must have fooled with it in the past and never screwed the rectangular plate back to the box. I will look at it tonight. Thx again everyone!! I'm doing a frame off restoration so i'm sure you'll here form me again.

Yes I think that's it. Look at the 2nd picture in post#7. The upper left stud in the picture shows the flat push nut over the stud which holds the plate/core assembly. IIRC there was another push nut on the lower right stud.
