59 tie rods painted or not?

Are the tie rods painted or are they left unpainted. I have read where they were dip painted . Are the tie rod ends painted? Thanks Pat McPherson

Don't know about a 59, but my 61/62 Judging Manual says there are not painted. I would think it says in the Judging Manual for your car.

Believe the whole front suspension was painted after assembly, then installed onto the frame. Most everything would have been painted with tar based paint. Refer to Noland Adam's book, pg 222, 223, and 224.

According to the Judging manual they are not painted either the rod or ends just inspection marks on the ends blue or yellow.

Maybe the tie rod ends were code painted for an assembly procedure, but then the whole assembly was then painted with some tar based paint. My unrestored '61 is as such. As Dan stated, see the photo's in Nolands book.Wayne

I looked at a 32,000 mile 1960 Bow Tie candidate car last week and there was some paint remaining on the tie rods. My 1960 tie rods had paint before I stripped it off to make them like the Judging Guide called for; no deduct for bare tie rods. That is probably an area to investigate when the next revision of the JG occurs.

They would have been painted in the chassis blackout process. The inspection marks were on there before the blackout.

It appears that in the 53-55 era the tie rod ends came already painted black. Can't say for sure. But I have some NOS ones in the original box that are already painted.

Patrick, simple answer is, if your are prepping your car for Flight Judging, no paint on tie rods per judging guide. If not prepping for Flight Judging, your choice.

Making your car conform to a Judging Manual is not restoring the car. Do the car correctly after looking at untouched originals, photograph any areas that you may want to 'discuss' with the Judges. I wrote an article for the Restorer in spring 1987 on how to detail a 58 to 60 engine compartment and related components. This was from information from unrestored cars and careful disassembly of them. Nolands book provides great original pictures showing the condition when the cars left the factory. Yes, there was paint on the tie rod ends, so it is not a problem to 'restore' the car that way.

I agree. I spent untold hours and dollars this past summer traveling to inspect and document low mileage unrestored cars (right down to the radio tubes) so I'd know for sure how they should be. Typically spent 11 hours inspecting each and took 500+ photos of each car. As time passes and more is known the TI&JGs get updated.

That's the way to do it Troy!!! Nothing is better than observing original cars to help you restore your own or buy one. Input from original cars is what will build a great Judging Guide. My last 58 to 60 Manual Revision was in 1990, no 'natural' castings were mentioned for suspension. It was all coated prior to or at assembly, not pretty but the way it was done. Thanks for your comments.

Looks like minor deductions for NTP. Easy to fix though!

That is exactly like my unrestored car. I can dig up pics if someone wants them

You realize even Gunk degreaser will remove the tar coating.
