    C1 Need Part Look Up

    I searched my Chevy Parts and Accessories CD-ROM and also GMpartswiki.com and could not find the description of the following part number: 156253. The screw holds the tailpipe insulator to the bumper. There is no asterisk next to it in the 1960 AIM that would indicate it is part of an assembly of parts. I am certain that I know what is correct, but need confirmation. Most likely the same screw used from 1958 thru 1960.

    I could not find the screw part number in any of my reference part books, but the 59 AIM shows two 156253 screws going into the rear bumber to hold the 3739354 exhaust pipe support assy.

      That is where the two screws are installed. The 1958-1960 Tech Info Manual and Judging Guide indicates that it a slot head screw, but of all the 58-60 cars I have observed (except one), the screw is a countersunk hex head.(phillips). I realize that there are errors in the JG, but in this case, I would like to confirm with actual Chevy part data.

        Joe,

        Thought I had previously looked up screw # 156253 for you? In the 1970 P&A 24 fastener parts books screw #156253 is a flat head screw.

          You are correct (upon further reflection). I was hoping that the parts book would indicate whether it was slot or phillips. Apparently, not that much detail is included.

            Not to disagree with my friend Mr. Chesnut, but my copy of the GM Canada Maintenance Products Standard Stock Catalog, lists the 156253 fastener this way:

            Section 8.908, Flat Head Bolts, Cad Plated

            156253= 1/4x20 thread, 3/4 inch length, head type= CR

            Where 'CR' means cross recessed

              Re: C1 Need Part Look Up

              Thank you Jack. Those are the dimensions of the bolts I have in place and the head is cross recessed. Whether I could convince an NCRS judge that cross recessed is correct and not slot head is to be determined.

              Where did the term phillips head come from?

                Google it (phillips head fastener), you'll find a nice description of origin on Wikipedia, amigo. On convincing a judge, send me a private email and I'll give you the page from the GM manual I cited...
