1967 Console - Brushed Aluminum Restoration

    Hi,

I'm going to repaint my console and see that the area around the shifter and the ash tray door need some help, Has anyone "restored" this aluminum instead of replacing it with a kit? Has anyone tried "repainting this area and if so, what process/paint did you use?

Finally, if I need to resort to one of the restoration kits, is the original surround difficult to get off? Suggestions for removal?

    Thanks,

    jerry

Remove both side panels from the lower dash, allow the flasher to dangle
remove the shifter knob and "T" handle, put the lever into 2nd or 4th gear
unbuckle the seat belts from the console clips and lay on seats
remove the screw used to attach the console to the tunnel and lower dash panel and heater defroster box
Gently lift the console up at the rear and pull to the rear up and over the shifter.
Inspect the console for damage a the screw holes, it may have at one time had them overtightened and cracked or split the console. This can be repaired with JB weld or Lord Fusor adhesives after paint removal.
strip the old paint of with lacquer thinner or acetone
make any repairs as needed to the console
get some good auto painters masking tape and then paint with SEM trim black.

installation is the reverse of removal

      Buehler
The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.
