Does anyone know the specifics of these wheel cover bags that were placed in the cars at factory? The assembly manual mentions there were 2 bags with 2 hubcaps in each bag back to back. Pictures would be great but a detailed description with matterial and dimensions Would be better. Thank you in advance

Maybe someone will be able to come up with this information. However, these bags were usually discarded at the dealership before any original purchaser ever took delivery of a car. It would be an extremely rare exception for an original owner to have been delivered a car with the hub caps still in the bags in the rear compartment and "rare on top of rare" for someone to still have those bags.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 Wheel cover bags #3817961
Don, my days at a Chevrolet dealership as a tech , I prep alot of cars and corvettes as well(C-3 era70.s) and they trim rings and covers were wrapped and sealed with plastic with a thick sheet of paper between each cap or trim ring. Not sure if the C-2 Era was. There is another poster here, Ralph Spears that had alot of GM dealership experience not sure of his era. though.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

My time at Luby Chevrolet in Boston was Sept, 1968 - spring of 1972. All 4 PO2 wheelcovers were in one box behind the seats i remember it was very heavy and you had to fold both seats forward to get it out of the car,All 4 Trim rings were in one heavy clear plastic wrapper with paper between the rings to keep from getting scratched, and all 4 of the center caps were in a single box with paper between them also. Also on the PO2's the valve extentions were in an envelope in the box with the wheelcovers.- Top

Re: 65 Wheel cover bags #3817961
Thanks Joe and Ed: This is a hopeful start to solving this issue. I know the judging rules state that the hub caps should be on the car at judging but I thought it would be a refreshing change to have them in the bags and in the car for these first events and possibly The Bloomington show. This idea came from Keith Majure and he thought it would make the old fuely car look more dramatic on the show field. Is there not a way to search the part number for all dimensions and materials for GM parts? David- Top

Re: 65 Wheel cover bags #3817961
There's no public database or web-site that has this information. There is an internal GM database that has the parts drawings for many parts. However, a lot of these old part numbers, especially one like the 3817961, are not in it. That means the only source for this information is old GM hard-copy records and, obviously, we don't have general access to those. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Most folks wouldn't even have had the opportunity to keep them since they were usually gone before the original owner took delivery of the car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 Wheel cover bags #3817961
Joe and Dick, When cars were preped for delivery those wheel cover bags were ripped open and discarded. The only exception would have been the 78 Pace cars, I remember those cars leaving the dealership, The owners wanted them left just the way they were, all the plastic left on the seats, steering wheels, spoilers still wrapped up, and decals in the back of the car( no wheel covers). some were taken away on flat beds to be put into storage where there are still alot with no mileage on them.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Dick thanks for your interest. Any thing you can tell me about the bags would be new and helpful. So please expand on this as best you can. Did they have the part# on the bag; was it burlap; paper; cloth? What color; size; texture? Thanks David- Top

Last summer at Bloomington there was a '67 Coupe displayed as a non-preped car.

Floyd Garrett of Sevierville, TN and owner of a muscle car museum had the brown paper bags made for his '62 red 409 Bubbletop's dog dish hubcaps. I think the car was recently sold. Check out his web site and give him a call. I met Floyd in the 80's and he's great guy.- Top

Here is how the trim rings came (in the back of car) for C3 era Corvettes. Photo courtesy of Ralph Spears...
