Re: Oil recommendations to use in a 427?
I have use C-J-4-15x40 for years. My car is in a garage which never gets colder than 45 degrees. This winter my car will be sitting in an outside garage where the temp could reach 0 degrees or so, Pa. Weather. I am putting in C-J-4-10x30 oil. This oil is hard to find, the only place that I can find it is at my local John Deere dealership.
As long as you don't regularly start the car below 15-20 deg. F, 15W-40 is fine. I assume you are aware that properly stored cars should be left alone until you are ready to drive in the spring. Starting a car during winter storage to "warm it up" does nothing but generate cold start/warm up wear and leave condensation in the exhaust system, which increases the rate of corrosion.
A 10W-30 is only necessary if you plan to regularly start the car down to 0 deg. F.
Winter storage temperature is not a criterion for selecting the low end viscosity grade. The low end viscosity grade should be choosen based on the lowest consistent cold start temperature expected during the service life of the oil.

the reason for all this is that I am taking my 66 to be painted. It will be at the painters for 8 months starting Nov.1. He may start the car sometimes, but it will be in unheated areas. Just for the piece of mind, it is not going to hurt to put in, yes Duke CJ-4 10W-30 Dutch- Top

Harry, I use Rotella T5 10w30 synthetic blend also available at WalMart at a reasonable price. It too is a CJ-4 oil.- Top

Re: Oil recommendations to use in a 427?
There is no legal or technical definition of "synthetic" when it comes to oil, but as a rule, products advertised as "synthetic" are composed of mostly Group II and III hydroprocessed base stocks rather than primarily Group I with some added II or III.
Higher groups have better oxidation resistance and a wider viscosity range, but unless you regularly start your car in Fairbanks and drive to Phoenix they offer little advantage in typical vintage Corvette use, which is typically low annual mileage accumulation in mild to warm weather.
Note the the oil monitor in modern Corvettes may allow up to 15K miles before a change is required, BUT regardless of mileage an ANNUAL OIL CHANGE is required for warrantly coverage.
I doubt if the previously stated 10W-30 is a "synthetic", however the 5W-40 CJ-4s are considered "synthetic", and cost about double a 15W-40 CJ-4.

Harry & Duke, notice it is described as a "synthetic blend" not "full synthetic" , Duke, yes it has a Dino oil base, yes it is higher about $14.00 a gal. but it is the recommended weight and/or the weight that Harry is wanting. My personal experience has been a noticeable reduction in oil comsumption, which is a result of the synthetic component of this blended oil.- Top

Dick, the Rotella Triple T 10w30 that you posted, that is the oil that I want, just for this winter.I would like to find 6 qts. If not, my CJ-4 10W-30 GroupII John Deere oil will be what I will use. I am sure it is the same oil. Dutch- Top
