    flexible brake lines

I just received a set of new flex rubber brake lines for my 59 vette. They have a dot number on them, Are they acceptable for judging? thanks Pat McPherson

Yes.......but if you don't like the DOT logo you can remove with some acetone or lacquer thinner. HOWEVER, the configuration of the hose will still be different from the original 1959 time period to the current time period. DOT compliance mandated different/more crimps between the hose and the fitting. So they can never really be the same.

Safety items like brake hoses receive a special exemption from judging. This should be in your judging manual or in the Judges Reference Manual.

Last year at regional flight judging, I received a point deduct for DOT markings. I used solvent and a lot of aggressive wiping to remove the DOT markings; no deduct this year. Having said that, a savvy judge will notice that the crimps are different than the original crimps and you could get a 1 point deduct or it could be a "dot" item. Two "dot" items = 1 point deduct.

I would score no point deduction for the DOT markings/crimp on the brake hoses, and cite the NCRS Judging Reference Manual Section 2.25 Safety, Security, Other Allowance & Scoring Bonus. This has always been the way it has been explained to me. However, I still might note it on the judging sheets for thoroughness/completeness.

Of course, one could then argue about the DOT markings on tires and headlights.

What is your opinion.......you are certified as a Master Judge.

EDIT: The most recent edition of the 1966 TIM and JG states on page 177 regarding this subject "Judging Reference- In the interest of safety, horizontal and/or multiple brake hose crimps are acceptable for Flight Judging".

            Larry-

I've always gone by the 'no deduction' reference you cited, but I've read several comments about owners getting docked nonetheless. That's why I asked. Judging should be as consistent as possible.

              Larry

Some year judging guides specifically call out the safely exception when discussing flexible brake lines and others don't. If your having a 68 or 69 judged you won't get deducted, if your having a 67 judged you probably will.

So we know the DOT hoses even with printing removed are visually different, however has anyone run across a deduct for not having the yellow markings on the hose? These were used to let visually inspect for twisting of the hose on the line. (I also got a deduct on hoses due to crimps, so back to real stuff)

I believe that is spelled out in the Judging Reference Manual. I am away from a copy but I believe it trumps whatever is in the judging manuals.
