    '65 Blackout Hood Prep

I've searched all through the archives for the process on prepping the underside of the hood to repaint. I've found a ton of information on how it was masked but nothing on the prep part. Can someone give me a run down on the proper process to prep the underside of the hood or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

Have you read John Hinckley's Midyear Assembly Process Document. It describes the C2 Paint line and process in great detail.

Thats probably because there wasn't much prep on the underside.

          Exactly!

These old images from John's Powerpoints show just how primitive the St. Louis body & paint line was during the 60's compared to todays standards...Real men didn't use respirators!! I'm almost surprised they don't have a cigarette in their mouth.

I think the poster is asking how to prepare the fiberglass surface of the underside of the hood on a car that has been in use a lot of years. I have found that there is considerable contamination in that area....brake fluid, anti-freeze, oil and road grime. I don't claim to be a paint expert but I have found cleaning the surface is a challenge. Strip the paint and with solvents of various types give your best effort to remove the contaminants. I like to prime with a few coats of self etching paint before the "top" coat is applied. Hope this helps.
