1960 lower radiator hose clamps giving me fits

I know this sound like a pretty dumb question, but I can not get the clamps on. These are the round spring type Corbin clamps on the lower radiator hose of my 1960. I even took the radiator back out and have it on my work bench.

I have the hose clamp pliers that allows me to squeeze the tips of the clamp together, but still can not get the clamp spread enough to go onto the hose. I have the clamp on the lower radiator outlet, then slipped the hose onto the outlet and trying to get the clamp onto the hose from that point.

Does anyone have a tip or technique to get the clamp spread more so that it will go over the hose.

    Thanks,

    Don

Are you sure you have the right size Corbin clamp? I usually put the clamp over the hose first, push the hose on, then work the the clamp back over the outlet.

Donald, I never could get the lower corbin clamp installed; gave up and installed a regular hose clamp. If you are squeezing the ends of the corbin to the point where they touch and it won't go over the hose, it must be the wrong size or the O.D. of the hose is too large and I doubt that is the case.

I bought reproduction hoses and clamps from Corvette Central one of the few items that actually fit the first time, sounds like the clamp size may be wrong.

Take the radiator out of the car and put that hose on and slide it back into place. I have 3 Corbin clamp tools nothing will work in that location. One tool is very expensive and it didn't work. You can do what I said trust me, I did it that way. For want its worth, I made a Corbin clamp tool out of a Vice-Grip, now I have a really, really good Corbin clamp tool and I can use it with one hand. I wish you luck, but my way will work.

The clamps I have came in a set from Paragon for the upper and lower radiator hose, so I have to assume they are correct, are at lease Paragon thinks so.

I do have the radiator out of the car since it is a new install it was easy to get out. This AM, with my wife's help, I was able to get it on by doing it the way John described in #2 above. It took both of us and was still a struggle. Me holding the clamp open and her pushing with a large flat bladed screwdriver. I ended up using a vicegrip clamped to one tip of the clamp and large channel locks on the other tip. I had to force the tips back past each other to get it over the raised area of the radiator outlet. I sure hope it doesn't leak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I need to put the radiator back in and see if we can get the one on the water pump.

I had to order some more of them. I only had two and had one loose and in the hose clamp pliers squeezing and it shot out, hit my garage ceiling and richoceted around the garage for a while and disappeared.

The only reason I am using these clamps is that's what the TIM & JG calls for.

            Thanks to all,

            Don

I just had the same problem with my 59. Clamps came from Paragon as well. I finally got them on ,using a lubricant ,a great deal of force ,and a lot of cussing. I had no problems with the heater hose clamps of the same design just radiator. Has anyone compared the repo clamps with originals ? I couldn't do that because I had no originals for comparison. Could this be another example of incorrectly manufactured products from Communist China ? Stephen Barrett (21558) 59,66,71

Had the same problem on my 60, paragon supplied a larger clamp after some convincing from me!

Why can't they ship the correct part to begin with. I'm having increasingly more quality problems with Paragon. Used them as the primary supplyer on my 59 restoration and suspect most of my problem parts were imported from Communist China. It takes a lot of the fun out of the hobby when you don't get what you payed for.

Sorry to hear you had the same problems, but at least now I know it's not just me. Putting this car back together has been one frustration after another. And a lot of that is due to poor fit of parts.

I ordered some of the loose clamps, not the kit, from Paragon. It will be interesting to see what I get. Like you, I have purchased most of my reproduction parts from Paragon. In fact I've spent about $13k on parts from Paragon in the last three years.

                    Thanks,

                      Don -

It helps a lot if you have a pair of Corbin clamp pliers with swiveling jaws - they've always been my tool of choice when dealing with Corbin clamps.

John, I do have a set very much like the ones you have pictured. The problem is, even with these pliers and the ends of the clamps squeezed all the way together, the clamp will not go over the raised area of the radiator outlet. I had to come up with a way to pull the clamp further apart. But I did get it on.

                        Thanks,

Paragon said that the batch of the large clamps that the have/had are undersized and came this way from the manufacturer. Thay admit that these particular size clamps are incorrect.

I have some more clamps being delivered tomorrow from Paragon. Hopefully they are the correct size. If not, I'll be calling them.

Can you say China. These vendors continue to buy ,buy, buy junk from China and sell, sell, sell to you and me. If I were in the Catalog parts business I would inspect all new shipments and have an acceptable example of an original part for comparison. I would ship all unacceptable parts back to vendor. It's only my opinion, but most of these vendors only care about the bottom line . Quality is not in their vocabulary.
