Bob on pages H263 , H264 in the Assembly Manual shows the ground wire locations.

I too would like to check that ground because the lights don't work on my 68s gauges. Do I check that flat on my back under the dash or is it possible to check under the hood? I've tried to look before but couldn't find it..

        Thanks
        Jim

Still struggling myself, Jim...I know where the console ground wire IS, just dont know what it attaches to. Also, another wire, one end attached to the Vacuum Override (Under steering wheel) for headlights and wipers, and the other end comes in behind the instrument panel....Behind the instrument panel, it's unattached....don't know where that goes either. I'll be posting pix in a minute fo Jeff's reply....maybe they will help!

            Hi Again Jeff,

I know where the instrument panel ground wire is and I've included a picture. As you can see, there's been a splice added to the wire...(Previous owner I guess) I have no idea where to attach it.
The other wire, (Second picture) is attached to the bracket for the Wiper and Headlight Override (Under steering wheel) and is routed to the instrument panel...again...No idea where it attaches at the end. Any help, really appreciated!!!!!

Bob i see the double black with the home made extension wire, i believe that goes to the ground lug on the ash tray retainer. Take a look at page H97. Where does the other end of that black wire with the blue eyelet attach to ??? Possible a heater ground wire ???

Got it!!! Thanks so much!!! (Just didin't think a ground would go there!!!)

Ok, below...You're looking UP from the floor of the Driver side...Just beneath the steering wheel. The "Blue" eyelet is the other end of the wire you're questioning. It's attached to the bracket for the Vacuum override. It goes from there, and comes out at the center console.....I'm lost!

                Thanks again,

Re: 1968 instrument panel ground wire location

Bob I just looked at my original owner 1968 convertible. The only ground wire I saw attached to the brace/mounting bracket for the wiper and headlight override vacuum switches is a ground wire coming from the center electrical switch that will disable your electrical function of the wiper switch for use in stopping the windshield wipers on the windshield for wiper replacement or cleaning of the wipers.

Having my radio out of the 68 and using a mirror the ground wire under the console I saw is actually two black wires attached to a female terminal connected to the cigarette lighter housing's male terminal.

The wire attached to the wiper electrical bracket in your picture with the blue insulation on the metal terminal is someones addition. The extended wire attached in your picture with the black tape around it is also someones addition.

The bracket in your picture above the black relay is backwards. The two open slots need to be facing the opposite direction. The two bottom bolts in the bottom of your gauge panel go into these bracket holes. The holes are open in the back of the brace facing the firewall so that the nuts that screw onto the two bolts that extend from the gauge do not have to be removed, only loosened to remove the gauge panel from the console. The nuts are difficult to install when the console and the gauge panel are installed because of their location.

                    Jim,

Thanks, on the Console Bracket...Saved me a lot of work!!!

...."The only ground wire I saw attached to the brace/mounting bracket for the wiper and headlight override vacuum switches is a ground wire coming from the center electrical switch that will disable your electrical function of the wiper switch for use in stopping the windshield wipers on the windshield for wiper replacement or cleaning of the wipers." - This makes sense to me...So, what you're saying is, it attaches to one of the two hex screws holding the wiper switch in place behind the console? Yes?

"The wire attached to the wiper electrical bracket in your picture with the blue insulation on the metal terminal is someones addition." - The blue one IS the one that goes to the instrument panel..(and hopefully attach to the wiper switch) Are you saying that there should only be ONE wire attached to the Vacuum Override Bracket?

                    Thanks,

Re: 1968 instrument panel ground wire location

Bob on my original owner 1968 when looking at the bracket below the steering column that has the electrical switch and the two vacuum pull down switches, there is only one black ground wire attached to the bracket. I just took another look to verify what I posted last night. I was wrong. The black wire does not originate from the electric switch in the bracket under the steering column. The black wire comes over the top of the switch and comes from another source that I did not trace because there are vacuum lines obscuring the path of where the black ground wire comes from that is attached to my bracket. Your picture shows this wire also and you will be able to see how it becomes harder to see where it becomes harder to trace from leaving the bracket. My bracket only has this one black ground wire attached to it.

What are you asking about the wiper switch behind the console? The only switch I mentioned is the electrical switch below the steering column attached to the bracket with the two pull down vacuum controls.

                        Jim,

My mistake...When you mentioned the "Center Wiper Switch" I thought you meant the switch on the console, to turn the wipers on and off...Now I see that the big knob between the two overrides is what you're talking about.

..."I just took another look to verify what I posted last night. I was wrong. I have the same black wire.. attached to the Bracket as well...and I don't know where it goes, but that's fine...The only problem I have is the Blue wire, on the other side of the Electrical Switch...that one runs from the Bracket and comes out behind the console....I contacted the previous owner..He has no idea what that wire is as well. No question someone has been in, under and around this car....

Like I mentioned, I'm wondering if it's not a ground for the aftermarket radio that was in there....

                        Talk soon .....LOL
