    1971 Blue Certification Label

The blue Certification label on my car is in very good shape except that it has stated to lift on one end about 1/2 inch in. I am getting my car repainted and not sure if I can reglue the label on and then try and paint around the label and overlay. Or should I try and fully remove it and hope it doesn't get damaged. I read in an older post that someone has reproduced these by taking a high quality digital picture of one and then reproducing it from that. Does anyone know who might do this complete service?

    thanks in advance

    Sheldon,
I have just recently experienced this dilema when replacing my 70 door rubbers and decided to repaint the jambs. I opted to remove my certification label by very carefully scraping a thin layer of paint off with the label using a razor blade (lots of sweat and anxiety) and then re-fitted after painting. This is not something I would attempt again as it is extremely easy to remove some of the blue backing. I re-attached the label with thin double sided sheet tape and a UV resistant mylar overlay. The cert labels are available on e-bay athough the blue colour is slightly darker and you would have great difficulty in reproducing the original style VIN font.

    Regards Shane

There are some reproduction labels out there that are now very close to the originals. If can find one the VIN on the label was made using the POP (protecto plate) so if you have the POP your in luck. Also the date since you have your original as a guide a office supply company can make a single rubber stamp using the correct font and spacing to duplicate it (OfficeMax, OfficeDepot etc.)
So if you are able to locate a near correct color label you could then makeup the new one once completed very carefully remove the original and the store it with your other original documents.

A quick look I found on ebay a label that the color looks very close to originals but photos can be deceiving and the GM with the under line looks to be to thick and a few other imperfections but here is the link.

FWIW, I did a little bit of research on the labels 5 or 6 years ago. If memory serves me correctly, the closest font to that used on the original label that I could find was 11 point PICA.
