    Intake manifold R & R

I need to remove the intake manifold to do some repairs on my '67 350HP - when I re-install it can I reuse the existing gaskets, or should I plan to replace them? Any other words of wisdom?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob -

Yes, you'll need new gaskets - you may find the article in the link below helpful.

      Bob,

I would replace the gaskets. I doubt that you could reuse the gaskets and even if you could, why would you want to? Is the engine in the car or on the stand? When I did the intake manifold gaskets on the 283 in my 65 pickup (the engine was installed), the gasket slid a bit when setting the intake on it. That was, like, bad and stuff! The next time I did it, I cut the head off some bolts and used them as alignment studs at all four corners. No problems after that!

Theoretically, I guess you could use the original gaskets but do you really want to risk a very possibly leak like coolant mixed in with the oil.
        IMO, always uses new gaskets.

If these are original gaskets (or even long-installed replacement gaskets) and, when the manifold is removed, the side gaskets remain intact, undamaged, in one piece and even remotely suitable for re-use, it will likely be the first time in the history of the world that happened.

              Thanks, Joe -

This engine was rebuilt about 6 years ago and does not have very many miles on it, but who knows what will happen when you pull of the manifold.

Any recommendations as to the best way to clean the gasoline stains off an aluminum manifold?

If original-style, embossed-type side gaskets were used (which do seal the best), it can be quite difficult to remove the gasket material, let alone any gasket stains. Permatex has available an aerosol gasket remover. Basically, I think it's a methylene chloride-based preparation like paint remover. However, it does work pretty well although more than one application and subsequent scraping is usually necessary. If you get down to where there are just stains remaining (assuming they are really just the stains and not very thin, baked-on gasket material), they don't really have to be removed. If you do want to remove them, the only thing that I have ever found that really worked was something like a 3M "paint stripping" or metal cleaning disc on a drill. However, these are abrasive and I prefer not to use them.

                    Bob,
I use finger nail polish remover on a Q-tip and and rub it in slowly, then wipe the area clean and may do it more than one time so as to not damage the aluminum.
