    54 heater shut off

Does the shutoff have an O ring on the end of the turn screw inside the casing? Also how do you get the screw shaft out of the casing with the packing around it, can you still get the packing or whatever this piece is, get it in and out without a problem. If I close mine I can still blow air or water through it, off the car. Thank's, Brad.

I have disassembled several of these but it was years ago. So I'm a little foggy on the details.

I was able to get the shaft and rubber tip out. Warm the rubber up first to get it soft. I don't recall any O ring or other means of sealing. I do think that when you open it you need to open it all the way tightly to get it to seal.

I have a few extras, including a NOS one in a Buick box!

to pull stem out open valve and then unscrew the packing nut. a good pull should get the stem assembly out, but it probably better to warm the packing as troy has stated. when the valve is closed it is a brass on brass seal. if you can feel air on the other side when the valve is closed the problem is either the valve seat is worn or the mating surface on the stem is worn. on ebay they sell valves for the 54 where the stem is at 45 degrees rather than inline like the original. the stem assembly will work in the original valve. if you have a packing leak you can use the stem assembly from the valves on ebay or remove the old packing from the original valve stem and use graphite rope packing. rope packing can be found at plumbing supply shops or ace hardware.

you can replace the packing with an oring - if you open it all the way - it shouldnt leak.....

Chris, Hi,what type of O ring may I ask? thought about hooking shutoff up to a garden hose with water outlet plugged to see if it leaks now in all the way open position before trying to fix something that isn't leaking. Thank"s, Brad.
