1972 LT1 TCS solenoid and switch

I have a 1972 LT1 that I am trying to reassemble. The problem is that many parts were off or missing when I purchased the car. I do have AIM and many other manuals, but still need some help.
I have a 4 speed car with no air, and it seems that the car didn't come with A.I.R.
Did this car come with TCS and does anyone have pictures that they can send? Any and all information will be appreciated.
    Thanks again.

You're car did come with A.I.R. and TCS. I'd bet a search of this board will yeild a good photo.

This is the TCS solenoid on a 70 L-46. The TCS relay is mounted on the bulkhead, just to the right of the wiper motor (looking aft).

        Jim,

Your car for sure came with A.I.R. I just happen to have an extra one laying around here. I have a 72, 454 car. It was not originally sold in California. When the car was brought here from Utah, in 1977, the A.I.R. system had been removed from my car.

To register it in California it had to have the A.I.R. on it even back then. So, the owner went to the junk yard and bought a 1972 smog system, then went to GM and bought the tubes and brackets, which you could still get at the time.

Anyway, after registering the car, he took the smog system off the car and threw it in a box with all the other original parts. The car he took it off of happen to be an LT-1 car.

I was lucky enough to find an original 1972, 454, A.I.R. set-up for my car that was taken off in 72. Even the hoses and clamps are dated right. So, this Lt-! set-up needs a home if by chance you need one. Bla, Bla, Bla.

The fact that you did not think it came on the car tells me you just might need one after all.

The guys here are great, but I happen to have a very good friend with a 100% original 1972 LT-1 if you need pictures or anything else.

Best of luck with your car.

        Monte

Re: 1972 LT1 TCS solenoid and switch

Jim, since my '72 is a L48 and not a LT-1, your installation will be slightly different than mine, notably due to the location of the vacuum port on your Holley carb. That said, I attached a file photo that "sorta" shows my TCS. This photo at least shows you the TCS canister, the grey foam muffler/filter, the electric supply and the vacuum "plumbing", which runs from the carb's vacuum port, through the TCS can and then to the vacuum advance canister. I hope this helps you in some way.

I agree with the other responders------your car WAS originally equipped with AIR and TCS and regardless of whether it was originally delivered in California or not.

                Joe,

I was in agreement with the LT-1 having A.I.R. The reason I even brought up California was that my 72, 454 car was NOT sold in California. In transferring the car to California, it had to have the A.I.R. system in tack. Which my car did not. So, they had to go get one, which turned out to be from an LT-1. Which my guess is it was originally sold in California (the LT-1) so it could end up in a junk yard here in 1977.

Just thought I would clear that up.

                  Monte,
Your 1972 LS5 would not have been legally sold new in California. In 1972 big blocks were supposed to be N/A in California.

                    Terry,

I know my 72, 454 was not sold in California. I should have used the word "NEW' or "ORIGINALLY" sold in California in 1972. In my initial post I stated that in transferring the registration from Utah to California in 1977, because the car was not sold here (new in California) to register it here in 1977 the the state required it to have the A.I.R system on it.

So, it was my fault to say the car was not sold here. I should have said the cars was not sold new here. But I am aware the it was not sold here new in California. But thank you for clearing it up for the rest of the members that I might have confused.

                      Even more clear.

The 1972 Corvette ,454 was not sold new in California at all, due to emission regulations. So, you could not buy a 1972 Corvette, with the LS-5 option, new in California at all.

I knew what I meant the first time. But as you re-read it, depending on your frame of thought, it can be taken a number of ways.
I hope this last statement clears up any questions or misunderstandings.

                            Monte,
I knew that you were transferring the car from out of state, and never thought otherwise. I merely wanted to point out that 1972 454s could not have been legally sold new in California. Even Base motor 1972 Corvettes sold new in California were required to have a special paper emissions label certifying their HC & CO output placed on their windshield. I am sorry if I used too few words to make myself clear. I am not often accused of that.
