    '65 396 stampings?

The stamping surface looks pretty bad but alot of bad things can happen over 47 years. Anyone like the stampings? Yea or Na?

Na . The letters & numbers look good but I dont see how they could be that sharp with all the file marks on the deck . But I am far from being a numbers judge .

Not an expert by any means, but I am used to seeing a different F in the machine code. The tails on the 1's in the VIN look short? That could be the photograph. Like Bill said, how in Hades does a pad get that rough and the characters remain that clear??
Edit: I meant flags on the 1's

Not sure I like or dislike stampings.....grain in the broach appears awfully course.

Bill/Mike, that's pretty much my take too, but photos can't be the final answer. That pad is pretty "rough".
Dick, I'm not sure about the length of the 1's but I do like the curved flags.

Thanks guys. I think I have my answer. I just wanted to put it to the "jury".

Horrible "broach marks" on that one. Looks like 100 grit sandpaper.
Not a parallel one on the whole pad, so even if the characters "look good" (remember - you can rent the correct letters, numbers and stamp holder) the pad will be forever suspect.

In-person high magnification would tell if there are any original marks left on that pad but I'm betting not.

Obviously can't comment on the broach marks but the letters and numbers look pretty good to me after comparing it another original 396 stamping. Especially the "9' which is also used as an upside down "6" and the rest of the assembly stamping. The two "1" 's, the 5 and 3 in the VIN derative match very well also.

Mike, the curved flag is the top arm of the '1'. I have seen them in different formats. The 1's used in '65 often had curved rather than straight flags, or arms coming off the top of the 1. However, I do think there are some straight arms used in '65. One owner of an original block told me to examine his stampings carefully to see how the curved flags existed on the 1's on his vin derivative. When I looked at the three 1's in his vin derivative, one of the 1's had a straight flag.

Tony, obviously something has happened to the pad surface. I was looking through my database and found another Mar 29 pad. It's from the Dave Burroughs 396 book.
