Every once in a while it will run perfectly, but most of the time it has a bobble when driving/pressing the accelerator (not a bog that works itself out, but a continual bobble, even at high speeds like something is blocking the jets...and restricting fuel flow). When this occurs, it is also difficult to keep it at idle when stopped unless I keep my foot on the gas pedal to maintain a higher idle. Sometimes it will idle on its own around 650-700 rpm, but many times it dips down below 500 rpm and would stall unless I kept my food on the gas. The choke on cold start works fine (idles fast until it warms up).
I changed the spark plugs and fuel filter about 3,000 miles ago, sprayed the carburetor with cleaner on several occasions, and used various additives over the past year in the gas to see if that would help. Still the problem persists and the plug tips now are covered with black soot from what I assume is from runing rich/fuel loading. I am not sure if I should try and clean/rebuild the carburetor, send it out for a professional rebuild, or buy a new one (and obviously keep the original in a box). I am looking for something that will be reliable so my wife can just get in and drive/enjoy the car.
Someone recently told me that they sent their Quadrajet out for a rebuild on two occasions and it still never ran perfectly, so they switched to a 600 cfm Holley and they have been happy ever since.
I was thinking about buying Ecklers universal Holley 600 cfm carburetor with vacuum secondaries and electric choke that is listed as a replacement (see link), but wanted to see if any of you had thoughts on the issue or potential replacement carburetor to include if anyone has used the below Holley. I saw a thread that someone has had success with the Holley 6210 and mechanical choke, but I am not sure that carburetor is the right one for me. If new is the way to go then I would be looking for a carburetor that mounts to the stock manifold.
