C3 stator body and windings coated in glyptal?

I have 2 859 42A 1969 alternators that I am rebuilding. One is an original untouched alternator that has bad bearings the 2nd is an alternator that has been rebuilt before. On the original untouched alternator most of the coating is still on the exposed body of the stator that you can see between the alternator halves and it just looks like darkened varnish to me. The 2nd alternator's stator was stuck in one of the case halves by corrosion and had been painted silver in the past. I had to clean up the exposed area of the stator of the 2nd alternator and want to recoat it prior to assembly.

I have read here that glyptal was used to coat and seal these windings, but there is a red glyptal paint and there is also clear glyptal varnish, which is correct? I think it is the varnish that would darken over time. What is everyones experience in this area? The red paint just does not look right to me.

    Thanks,
    Joe

I don't know if it was Glyptal but it was a more-or-less clear varnish. I believe it was slightly yellow, though, even when new.

On mine, after 40years, it is dark reddish-brown.

We used, and maybe still do but I am out of that area now, a lot of the red Glyptol at the utility where I work. There is none of that in any GM alternator I have seen.

Correct. Glyptal is just a red enamel paint. What is on the alternator parts is a clear reddish-brown material, not an opaque paint.

Re: C3 stator body and windings coated in glyptal?

Thanks for the opinions. As I thought it is not this glyptal red paint, but it could be clear glyptal varnish. Here is a link. http://www.glyptal.com/1202Tech.pdf
I guess I could use any varnish, but would need to tint it a bit to darken it. Here is a picture of the untouched stator that has most of the coating still there. It is a dark color. I may try to replicate that. As you can see prior to disassembly the look was more black(dirt/grease), but after cleanup it appears a more carmel color(as Joe indicated). Again this one I am not going to touch, it is the 2nd that I had to clean the corrosion off of. Any more opinions?

Joe, I used a polyurathane with the a pre mixed walnut stain mixed in with it (Minwax). I know its not want the factory used but looks darn good. Its lasted for about 5/6 years now.

Attached are some photos through the drive end case of a brand new, NOS GM #1100543 alternator [not for sale]. This alternator was assembled July 2, 1970 and never installed or used. I think the best place to see what the color of the varnish was is the machined surface of the "ring" between the V-shaped "spokes" of the rotor. We can't go by the appearance of the V-shaped "spokes" since those are a dark color even before the application of the varnish and this dark color "shows through" the translucent varnish. You will note that the varnish on the machined surface is a yellowish color.
