    Vette Commanders Louisiana Style

Hello, I am a new member, by no means a Corvette expert and have started cleanup/resto of a 1965 convertable with both tops. I have had the car for sometime and used it for parades etc; light duty. I joined this group and bought books needed from the NCRS store to see what we had to work with. Car has one repaint but chassis has 48 years and 96k miles so some surface rust but no holes in frame (other than factory slots). 327/300 correct numbers engine looks to have one rebuild as block 30 over. Lucky we decided to take apart as No 1 main bolt broken and in pan. All mains washed so we are lucky we did not hurt it goofing off in front of the house!!! Bonding strips are visable on complete car if you really look and close inspection on underbody reveals no patchs or wrecks anywhere. Very clean car to work with, good chrome & interior. I need help in many areas but do not think I should have a two page post of questions for the first post. Can I do two please?

    1. Behind the rear passenger wheel is a vertical fiberglass brace holding the lower quarterpanel. The lower 4 inches of bonding? or whatever was used is not working. The lower quarter can be wiggled outward and minor cracks in paint are starting as it must be flapping in the (Drew) brees. How can this be repaired WITHOUT taking the body apart or slapping an obvious patch on it? Trying to keep the unrepaired look.

    2. This car is highly optioned including real leather. The interior is complete and in great shape with the exception of the seam in the lower center panels of the drivers seat. Leather is in tact but threads pulled out of the seam from many years of drivers (heavy); not me at 160 lbs. Who can repair this and keep the old cracked look of the seats? Panel edges are saw toothed from the stitch pulling out. Passenger is perfect just 47 years and 352 days old. Cars birthday is Jan 12th.

Thanks in advance and Happy New Years. Stephen

    Welcome aboard.
I can't help you with answers to your questions, but I know who can. Get in contact with these guys/gals:

This is the Louisiana Chapter of NCRS. These are a great bunch of people who can direct you to local shops that can work with you to get your 1965 ship shape. If you want to go the DIY route they can help you with that too.

I'm not sure about '65, but the '63 seats are both the same and can be swapped side to side. The driver's side bottom seat cushion outer side panel wore out from years of sliding into the seat, so I had that piece replaced by an upholstery shop (The correct material was available back then.) and swapped the seats side to side, so that option may be available to you if the '65 seats are the same on both sides.

          Stephen, Welcome!!!

Take a look at this pictorial of how I repaired a vinyl '65 seat with that same problem. It was split at the seam. I used a patch from below and restitched manually. It has held up fine. Car belongs to a member/friend here.
