    Garage Update

This is a follow up to a previous post. The exterior of the garage was finished in time for me to get the cars in for winter. The garage is 24 X 32 with 10 foot ceilings, 2 X 6 walls, and heat tubes in the floor. Currently I have a temporary power cord running from the attached garage so I do at least have lights. I still have a very long way to go to finish it, thanks for everyone’s help. Don H.

    Don,
Nice looking garage and the 2 red cars do compliment the building.

      Sweet!

That looks like an extra tall overhead door. I like how high the windows are. Lets some light in yet nosey folks can't peek in to what's there.

Don: That looks great. I built a garage back in 2006. You likely know this but the web site garagejournal.com was very helpful to me in building the garage. Give that look if you have not previously.
        Good luck on completion.

          Hi Don,
Very nice looking cars in that garage.
The in-floor heating is a great idea. What's the source of energy for the floor?
Seeing your studs reminded me about what the interior could be. In my garage I used 4x8 sheets of 'masonite' (type) tile board. It has a perfectly smooth, rather hard and durable bright white finish. It really makes the interior of the garage very light and has a surface that's easy to keep clean. I glued it in place to the studs and used a plastic strip that is part of the system between the sheets vertically, and at the corners.
I ran it half way up on some walls and used peg board above it.
The garage does need to be dry to use it, but yours looks like it certainly will be.
          Worth checking out?
          Regards,
          Alan

            Re: Garage Update

I'm curious as to why the entry door and windows are on the far side of the garage. I have 2 detached garages and all entry doors and windows face my house so they aren't hidden from view in case someone tries an unauthorized entry.

Thanks everybody for the replies. The door & windows are on the side that faces my house. The heat in the floor will be a heated & circulated fluid (antifreeze solution). This picture shows the tubes and pattern before the pour, they are attached to the rebar. The house you can see in this picture (and the previous picture) is my neighbor's, the garage sits closer to his house than mine. Yes, I do need at least one lift but you need to tell my wife that not me . . . Thanks, Don H.

                  Hi Don,

Your garage looks very nice, as well as your toys. Your floor heat looks exactly like what my son-in-law did 5 or 6 years ago. It makes for very nice even heat with a warm floor, but of course it is slow. If you want to leave the heat on full time that system works very well. But I am in the Northeast and I only want to use the heat when I am working out there, so an overhead gas unit heater with its fast recovery time is better for me.

I'm sure you are going to do this, but for the walls and ceiling - wire, insulate, and cover with 5/8" fire-code drywall. You want the fireproofing it provides and it seals off the whole interior and can be painted any color you want, most likely a light reflective color. It is also easy to maintain - small digs, etc can be easily fixed, the the garage repainted if/when it gets old and dirty. If your garage was attached, then this would be required by the building code.

My wife calls mine 'my palace'. That was, of course, before I put in a nice Formica covered workbench. Then it became 'her banquet room'. I'm sure you know how that goes.

For lighting I bought light fixtures from HD. Dual 4 foot T8s. Each fixture has 4 -4' tubes for dual - 8' long lights, if you know what I mean. I have 4 of them in a 12x24 foot garage with 12' ceiling. Very bright, and with off-white painted drywall, perfect.

If I can ever figure out why I can't post pics, I will post them in my thread from earlier this year. I have re-sized them and tried at attach them, but for some reason they won't attach.

Stay warm, We have 2 feet of you know what up here. -Dan-

In-floor hot water radiant is the way to go. Very economical and very even. We have it in our house and guest house, so much better than forced air or radiators. Takes a while to spool up though, no instant gratification with that heat, have to plan ahead.

Great looking garage, Don. Take advantage of those 2x6 walls when you insulate. Post #14 in the thread below still has some things that you should do.

P.S. Forget the lift. It will be in the way if you do any big projects, and your ceiling is too low.

Don, this type of drywall is known as "Type X". It is more expensive, but in the unlikely event of a fire it can give you time to remove the cars, or even delay the entire structure from becoming engulfed long enough for help to get there. As Dan noted, some building codes require this on the sides of a garage attached to a house, although some codes only require it on the ceiling and some don't require it at all. Since your garage is detached, these codes do not apply.

I was required to use it the ceiling and one wall, but I used it on all of the walls in my shop because of the fire protection it offers.
