    70 L46 Water Pump Fittings

Should the water pump fittings be painted silver or bare metal?

    TIA,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

    I vote for bare.

My 70 L46 was pretty original in this regards and it showed no evidence of paint.

I also looked in the dobbins book and it looks unpainted.

Neither. It was unpainted ZINC PLATED. These nipples were installed at St. Louis, long after the engine assembly was painted at Flint.

[Mike -- a tip that has often been offered here:

If there is a part number for the item in the AIM it was installed in St Louis. Often in the AIM drawings you will see a item identified by a box with a diagonal slash through it and half of that box white and half black. This symbol identifies a part "supplied by others" which means that was part of an assembly that was shipped to St Louis (in some cases for this nipple the engine). Thus that part in some cases would have been on that assembly when it arrived at St Louis -- and in those cases it would be painted orange.

In the case of your question that nipple is an elusive bugger in that you have to identify if L-46 is different than base, or LT1, or BB. I did that for all 1970-72 combinations for an earlier thread on here. The results of my work no only appeared in that thread, but you can count on them being in the next complete update of the 1970-72 TIM&JG.

Edit add: Removed the AC reference. That did not pertain to whether it was instilled at the engine plant or not -- only to the length of the nipple, and then only after they began to be installed at St Louis.
