    '60 Side trim clips

What are the correct clips for attaching the lower side fender trim? When I removed the trim it had those arrowhead looking clips that compress and then spring back out when pushed in. I purchased some " '58-'61 retainer clips" from Paragon but the clips does not match the channel of the trim. I bought two NOS trim pieces that did not have any clips on them. The first two holes from the tire well can be reached from behind so a threaded stud or stud with speed nut can be used. The two holes by the door cannot be accessed to use any kind of clip tha requires a nut. Can anyone tell me what was actually on them from the factory?

From what I remember they are all screws and washers and nuts.

both the upper and lower front cove stainless trim utilize a Z-shaped piece(when its held on side view) at the locations closest to the door pillar.. the Z pieces are secured to the body with pan head slotted sheet metal screws BUT one must take a straight edge to the fastner to determine how much of the head of the fastner needs to be ground down. if this little bugger isn't ground down sufficiently, when you install the stainless trim you will end up with a protruding dent in the NOS trim. you'll need a total of four of the Z pieces to do one c-1. mike

Good advice. I have a nice little dimple in my NOS trim due to not paying attention to the height of the screw head.

Thanks Philip and Mike. I have the same exploded view that you attached. I ordered the "Z" shaped fasteners from Paragon but they do no t even come close to fitting in the channel on the back side fo the trim. They are too small. They fall right out. I don't know if I was shipped the wrong clips or what. Once the correct clips are obtained, does the trim just snap on? It looks like you would hook it at the bottom and pus up and in to make it spring over the top of the Z clip. Is that correct? Also, I'm going to ask this question in another post but do either of you have a tip on how to repair broken studs on the SS trim that runs down the top of each fender? Thanks again guys and Merry CHRISTmas!

The clips don't seem to fit when not mounted on the car. When screwed onto the car in the correct position, the molding will snap onto the clips. Don't forget about the height of the mounting screw.

Charles, regarding broken off studs for top of fender fasteners. I fashioned a threaded stud out of a fine thread bolt with a slot top and a very thin washer and used JB Weld to affix it to the underside of the stainless trim piece. That repair has held for years. You don't need to tighten down the trim piece enough to break loose the JB Weld.

Regarding the Z-shaped fasteners (AIM calls for 3 on each side), since I already had the kick panel and the door panel off, I used three of the other type of fasteners that are common to the stainless cove pieces. I believe you can actually reach the ones behind the kick panel without removing it, but it is a stretch of the arm.

Thanks Roger. I'll attach a couple to one side and see how it fits. Joe....thanks for the tip on the top fender trim. On the lower fender side trim, I've got the kick panels removed as I am replacing carpet, door panels and kick panels. I've tried my best to see where the fasteners would come through but just can not see them much less try to get a nut on. I tried sticking a 1/8" welding rod in the hole from the outside and see if I could see where it came through but when I stuck the rod i the hole, it only went in approx. 3/8" before it hit metal with no hole anywhere around it. I shoved some speaker wire in the hole next to the door opening and it came out the bottom door hinge cavity so there is no way to access that. I'm going to attach the Z shaped clips to the car as Roger suggested and see if the trim will snap on. Thanks again guys and I will keep you posted!!!
