    1979 Ralley Wheels , Rims

    Hi All,

    I have found 2 Ralley Wheels Dated : K 1 9 3 (VALVE STEM) 6 AZ

In the description is written they are for 69 ,are these Dates Codes not the same for a 1979 ????

Or is there any differnce on the Rims from 69 to 79 ???

    Thanks for all Comment.

    And For All Members :

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR

According to my book the AZ code is 69-82 Corvette 8 inches wide. And I agree that the date code could be either but I'm no expert on ralley rims. Hopefully someone else can shed some light on that.

At some point (I believe by 1979) the year in the stamp became two digits. Thus I think for 1979 the code would be K 1 79 3 (VALVE STEM) 6 AZ

All 69 wheels had a small BB shot weld on them. Was used as a static balance. Look on the rims where the trim ring goes and if it is a 69 wheel you will see what I mean. No BB weld means you have a 79 rim. If needed I can get you a picture of my 69 wheels and show you.

          Anthony -

Actually, the BB shot was unrelated to balance. It was part of the "match-mounting" system to minimize the "smooth-road shake" phenomenon, where the high runout spot on the wheel was aligned with the low runout spot marked on the tire (or vice versa) just prior to the mounter.

Many years ago I owned a replacement !5" X 6" 67 Corvette rally wheel (GM # 3968773) stamped as follows near the valve hole:
            "K-1-85 3(valve hole)15 FI" (March 15, 1985)

Back in March 1980 I bought 4 over the counter 65-66 Corvette wheels (GM # 3869156) from my local Chevrolet dealer that were stamped as follows near the valve hole:
            "K 1 8 3(valve hole)16" (March 16, 1978, I assume)
These wheels were ordered and came from Progress & Winks of Bensalem, PA.

Could be over-the-counter rims from 69 which would not have BB shot on them. Only production line would have had BB shot.

I remember seeing "BB shot" on some of my S10 wheels. I always thought it was the result of sloppy welding.

I have been dealing with Chevrolet steel wheels since 1963 and I have never noticed any "bb shot".

We look for the BB during BowTie judging for 1968-1972 and it has been in both our TIM&JGs since 1993.

The four 65-66 Corvette wheels (GM # 3869156) that I bought in March 1980 had white labels with black text as shown below. I have always assumed that the stamped code "K 1 8 3(valve hole)16" was March 16, 1978, but maybe the date should be March 16, 1968.

Wayne has a NOS over the counter 65-66 Corvette wheel (GM # 3869156) dated in the year 1984 with a blue/white GM label as shown in a very recent post in another thread entitled "Kelsey Hayes JK wheels????".

1968-74 Corvette AIM's specify to "...match the mark on the wheel and the tire...". The "BB shot" is the mark on the wheel. Whether this was used for other than Corvette applications I do not know.
