    1967 Hardtop Liner Insulation Question

    Hi,

My original saddle tan liner is still in great shape. However, the foam backing turn to dust and I removed all of it from the liner.

The "cardboard" insert is still in great shape also.

My questions is...what can I do to replace the foam between the headliner and the cardboard insert? The top is being painted and will not go back on the car. OR...do I just glue the liner back to the cardborad and call it a day? OR...does anyone have an alternative to the foam?

    Thanks

    Jerry

I replaced my saddle headliner with a new one from Corvette America and it was easy to change out, perfect fit and right color. I think it was less than $200 shipped.

      Mike,

My original one is in great shape. I'm looking for the foam insulation to install. I just might go to a craft store ans see if I can pick up some thin insulation. By the way, my car left yesterday for painting! Hopefully this project will be done by springtime!

      Happy Holidays!

        Jerry,

I believe the foam can't be more that a 1/16" thick and may be a pain in the axx to install, for the money I wouldn't even mess with it I would just go with a new headliner.

Re: 1967 Hardtop Liner Insulation Question

          Jerry,

I thought about doing that on my 67 hardtop, but could not find a product to replace the detiorated foam that would stick to both the cardboard and the back of the vinyl. Then when I realized how detiorated the cardboard and foam was, I opted for a new liner assembly.

In years past, I tried to glue the original liner back to the deterioated foam to remove the sag. It would work for a while, but then break loose again. The original foam just turned to a powder, with the hot/cold/moisture conditions of a hardtop.

Then when I pulled the cardboard out it didn't come out in one piece, that made my decision for a new liner assembly. (althought I saved the original for a template)
Here's a few pictures of my liner coming out:

You can see the areas where I tried to re-glue the liner in years past.

Yours might be in a lot better shape than this one. During the late 60's and early 70's, my 67 was my only car, and was regularly parked outdoors with the hardtop on.

Just a thought, if your liner fabric is in good shape, maybe you can glue it over a replacement liner. The pattern of the replacement liners are a little different from the originals, but with a little lemon pledge, they look pretty good. I did save my original liner in a box, I had re-dyed it once and it was just about falling apart, so I couldn't reuse it.

Thanks for the pic's Jerry. I'm going to get a sheet of foam and try to put this together. My cardboard liner is in great shape.

You want to get the contact adhesive on the hard board, spray or roller and then drape the foam on that. They make thin sheet foam with adhesive already applied so that once stuck to the hard board you can then peel off the backing and stick your original vinyl on the foam. There is also 2 sided, not sure where to get it, in the OEM world we get it from suppliers that can handle larger volumes. I'd try to find the 2-sided version and make this shorter work.

Looks like an interesting project. Maybe write a story on it

Thanks everyone. I'll try to find that foam with the adhesive (any sources??) and let you know how I make out. Good winter project!

Jerry, Goggle- The Fabric Empire, sells 1/4" foam by the yard. I would used 3M spray tack to adhere the foam and the original liner.

I recently stopped by an auto upholstery shop and purchased about 1.5 square yards of vinyl with a foam back for $15.00. It almost matches my saddle interior, but I'll probably end up spraying it with LICC's saddle paint. The piece I bought was a leftover scrap piece. Look around in the shops near you!

                      Thanks

                        Jerry,

I would like to know how it turns out because the hardtop for my 67 has the saggy vinyl issue.

I started disassembling my 67 hard top last night. Some of the weatherstripping on the front and sides crumbled. Te headliner came out in mostly one piece although the cardboard in both side flaps fractured as I tried to work them out. I just took pictures with my iPhone as I went along and will use those to supplement the AIM and glassworks YouTube video for reassembly. The disassembly was straight forward so hopefully the reassembly goes half as smoothly.

I bought a resto kit from Glassworks at Carlisle a couple of years ago and said it would make a good winter project. It has all of the rubber, clips, headliner, and glass and should make this a fun project. Well, it's 20 degrees in St Louis today so I guess it's winter, again. I might just get it done this winter.

                              Hi Jerry,

Have you thought about using dynamat or hushmat? It's about 1/8 inch thick and you also get the thermal and acoustic insulation properties as a bonus. You would need to peel and stick to one side and use spray adhesive on the other. There may be similar materials that are thinner.
