67 L79 tanker to be sold at BJ

saw this on the other Corvette forum

This 1967 is listed as an original engine tanker 1967 selling at BJ this year

    The VIN is 194377S100810

    http://www.barrett-jackson.com/appli...n=1402&aid=466

If you google that VIN it comes up as this burnt 67. Doesn't look like a red tanker to me.

    http://www.salvageautosauction.com/v...-West-Virginia

any one know the car. or story? I know the owner of LIC owns one of the N03 67. and I thought I saw a thread on this board a while back about another 67 N03 that was sold new in Europe maybe Germany. the web site for the car I think showed the MSO from GM for the car showing it as a real tanker.

so is the second real N03 car out there. or did GM make more then two like all the record books show. or are there many back yard N03 cars out there.

    Keith -

The B-J listing says it has the original engine, but doesn't say it's an original tanker - just says it "has" the 36-gallon tank. Since the only two '67 N03 cars are well-known, that's "wordsmithing" at work, IMO.

          Keith -

As I recall, the red one is a 300hp automatic.

I wonder why the number dropped so much from 1966 when 66 were made?

I have a document from GM that you sent away for called a restoration packet. In the booklet there is page about N03 and it said due to lack of sales they stop production in October of 1966

I suspect the real reason is that GM lawyers could smell trouble if one of these N03 cars was in an a collision resulting in a fireball causing death to occupants of the Corvette and possibly the other vehicle as well.

I can see the plaintif's argument: "The design calls for up to 36.5 gallons of premium fuel, located as close as 12 inches behind the driver/passenger's back, entirely in the passenger compartment".

Many years ago, Art Armstrong was picking up GM rumors that they might even recall the remaining big tank cars; haven't heard much since then.

Now wouldn't all out hearts go pitter patter If they could identify those cars that were really tankers at this stage? That would really throw a monkey wrench in the works. I couldn't resist pointing out the obvious and stir the pot a little on a boring Sunday afternoon.

                    Terry,
that has to be the hardest option to add.
To duplicate how GM modified the body it is very hard to reproduce.

More likely the deletion was because 1967 was NOT supposed to be a continuation of the 1963-66 body style, but the "more advanced" 1968 style - a far more difficult (in 1966) to adapt to the large tank. When required - for Le Mans, Daytona, et al - the large tank could be achieved.

So who is in contact with BJ on this VIN?

HMMMMM, may be a disappointed buyer come Monday when all this comes to light..........a lot of the buyers at BJ do not do their homework other then getting their bank ready to wire money....

saw an AIR car(Mustang) sold that I had seen before at a private collection....car never existed until paperwork made up......buyer was litterally walking off the stage after winning bid when he overhears about the car then complained in the tent before paying and backed out.......but BJ is supposed to verfify these cars before auction right?

Nope. They rely on the information provided by the consignor, unless something looks really flaky or an issue is raised.

Very true, and I guess unless there are NCRS documents involved, NCRS has no say in any of this as well. It is totally caveat emptor.
