What color are the tie rod tubes supposed to be on a '72 with power steering. I know the ends are natural.

Re: Tie rod shafts
They were coated to one degree or another with a black asphaltic coating after the linkage assemblies were completed at the manufacturing source. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Kurt
As both Joe and Terry have stated there was a black coating applied to the steering assembly. But for Flight Judging we normally see natural tie rod tubes here are some photos of a Bowtie 72 steering assembly.- Top

Re: Tie rod shafts
The coating that was used was sloppily applied. In addition, it was not very durable, at all. One would think that an asphaltic coating would be quite durable but the one used here was not. In addition, if a chassis was ever steam cleaned, off came the coating. In the case of the chassis pictured, I think that the chances that it was steam cleaned at least once are near 100%.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I agree whole heartedly with your underlined statement. That car was way too clean for a less then 400 mile car that had been stored in Wisconsin for three or four decades.Terry- Top
