C1 (1960) road draft tube gaskets

I got a new bolt kit for the draft tube on my 1960. It came with two gaskets, one smaller one to go under the head of the bolt and a larger one to go between the tube and the block. I thought I read somewhere that from a judging perspective there should be no gasket.

Can someone let me know what is correct per judging? Should I use either of the gaskets?

    Thanks,

    Don

    Don,

I have removed several original road draft tubes from various 58-62 junk yard Chevrolets w/283's back in the 1980's and I do not remember any of them having gaskets. My 1962 Corvette AIM (Sect. 6, sheet 11.00) does not show any gasket for the 3737028 road draft tube, just the 432903 bolt and 120392 washer. The 120392 is a steel washer (9/32" ID X 5/8" OD X 5/64" thick) w/cadmium plating as per Gr. 8.929 in my 1963 (Oct. 62) Chev. parts catalog.

The only reason I added the gaskets as I was told that in some instances without the gaskets, you can get a fine mist of oil coming out of the top hole or around the large diameter if the tube doesn't insert snug into the block. I played it safe and added the gaskets. Neither gasket is visible.

So you got no judge comments at the regional meet?

No, because there was nothing for them to see. I trimmed the top gasket small enough to be hidden under the hex bolt head, but large enough to seal the hole.

            Thanks Joe,

i was asking because I know someone else at the Texas Regional that got dinged a couple of points for having a gasket on his 62.

Did you ask him if he trimmed the gaskets so they were not visible? Or installed them as is?

Re: C1 (1960) road draft tube gaskets

I just came across some vent tube bolts from Chev. 283 engines that were stored in my garage attic. I found the bolts in salvage yards back in March 1991. Enclosed are 5 photos.

photo #1: The top bolt is from a 1959 Chevrolet 283 (eng. stamped "T1029D" or Oct. 29, 1958; intake casting "I 30 58" or Sept. 30, 1958), assume GM part # is 432903 as per 1962 Corvette AIM, 1/4"-20X4" with 1 1/8" thread length, head marking is "E". The bottom bolt is from a 1965 Chevrolet 283 (eng. stamped "T0311GF" or Mar. 11, 1965; block casting date "C 5 5" or March 5, 1965), assume GM part # 9420839 as per 1965 Chev. AIM, 1/4"-20X4" with 15/16" thread length, head marking is "RBW".

                Photo # 5 shows the washer (GM # 120392, 9/32" ID X 5/8" OD X 5/64" thick)) and gasket (GM # 5646135) that came with the 1965 Chev. bolt (GM # 9420839). The black fiber type washer measures 9/32" ID X 5/8" OD X 3/32" thick.

I apparently lost the washer from the 1959 Chev. bolt (GM # 432903) at the salvage yard.

I have removed several from Pass cars & they all came with 2 gaskets & a flat washer under the bolt head. FWIW.
