Looking at finned balancers that I've had in a box for a while. Found what I expected; H61 and B62. Also found a big surprise: 9 61. I have to admit I've not studied these much. I only recall noticing letters denoting the month, not numerals. What have you guys seen?

Re: Dating on finned balancers
I seem to recall seeing two different balancers each with a different 'part number' cast or stamped. If indeed threre are two part numbers that might explain the alpha vs numeric month designation????????- Top

Re: Dating on finned balancers
All-----
There actually was another part number for the 8" 327 SHP balancer. It was used for all or part of the 1966 model year. It was GM #3883961. It was discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1966 and replaced by the 3817173 which had been used for 1962-65.
I can't find a predecessor part number to the 3817173 for the 1962 model year but it's possible there was one. The 3817173 looks like a number that MIGHT not have been around at the beginning of that model year.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Dating on finned balancers
I remember looking for 173 balancer for my 63 and instead came across a different number finned balancer. I'll check the number but it is likely the 961 balancer.
Can the number/date be seen from the back or is it on the front?- Top

Re: Dating on finned balancers
Hey, Mike,
Not sure if this will help or not but back in 1988, I bought a used 8" balancer at a swap meet so can't know what engine it came off of. Front side has 173 (assume last 3 digits of 3817173) stamped near outer edge and F1 6.2 cast into backside of one of the three spokes, for lack of better term. Looks like one other spoke has a 2 and a 0 cast on it, but the letters are very faint.
My '62 340 engine is still assembled in the car so I can't get you any info on it unless I pull it for a rebuild.
