    Locating 7817575 smog pump

I'm trying to locate a 7817575 A.I.R. pump for my '75 corvette, build date K01. Please let me know if you have a lead on this pump.

I've got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that a GM #7817809 AIR pump, even NOS, is not really that difficult to find. The bad news is that it's not the pump originally used for 1975 Corvettes. It's not even externally configured the same as the original 1975 pump. As far as 1975 Corvettes are concerned, the 7817809 was SERVICE-only. The 7817809 was originally used on 1976 Corvettes, though. The AIR pump used for 1975 ONLY was GM #7817575. It's a LOT harder to find, although it's externally configured the same as the 1969-74 original pumps.

...and here are photos of an NOS GM #7817809. Note the differences in configuration of the aluminum case and backing plate. The 7817575 is a 17 cc pump whereas the 7817809 is a 19 cc pump.

        Re: Locating 7817809 smog pump

One more thing I should note here. I have seen a lot of 1975 Corvettes equipped with the GM #7817809 pump. However, I've never been able to determine if these pumps were original. The GM #7817575 pump was discontinued from SERVICE in February, 1976 and replaced by the 7817809. So, any 1975 pump replaced with a GM pump after that time would have received the 7817809. Also, rebuilder's catalogs since "forever" have cataloged the 7817809 style pump for 1975 applications. So, no matter what route one used to obtain a replacement pump, one would have received the 7817809-style pump.

It's, of course, also possible that the 7817575 pump was used earlier in the 1975 model year and the 7817809 later in the 1975 model year.

Do we have any original 1975 owners out there that KNOW their AIR pump has never been replaced?

Thanks for the response Joe. I misunderstood one of your previous posts that said the 7817809 was used in PRODUCTION from early 1975 through 1978, but appreciate the correction. Now if I could just change the title of this thread...

If I said that previously, I expect it was an error. However, I may still be proven correct in that previous post and incorrect in this one if enough original owners show up here with 1975's that have the 7817809 pumps.

One thing that may have caused my possible error in the previous post: I didn't know about the 7817575 for many years. Since it was available in SERVICE for just a short period of time (essentially, just the period of the 1975 model year and a few months more), it kind of "slipped through the cracks" unnoticed by me.

GM cataloged the 7817809 pump for 1972 through 1978. However, it was NEVER originally used for 1972-74 and unless it was used later in the model year, I don't think for 1975, either.

Thanks again Joe. I do have a bead on an A.I.R. pump that the owner said is original to his 1975. I will post pictures when I receive them.

                  Hi Joe,

For the sake of education, can you provide a picture of the 7817575 casting #?

                    Peter-----

There are TWO casting numbers found on AIR pumps. One is on the aluminum case of the pump. However, it cannot be seen because it's behind the fan on an assembled pump. The other casting number is on the backing plate of the pump. It can easily be seen. However, the casting number for the 7817575 pump backing plate is the same as that used for all 1969-74 pumps. The backing plate of the 7817575 is shown below. Also, there is a date code found on these pumps on a machined surface of the aluminum housing. I have attempted to show it in a photo but I don't know how well it will show. In any event, the code on this particular pump is "022541S". the "02254" portion of the series refers to the 225th day of 1974 or August 13, 1974. I believe the following "1" refers to the shift. "S" refers to the pump model.

By the way, so there's no confusion, the GM #7817575 is an ASSEMBLY PART NUMBER and NOT a casting number. The 7817575 part number appears nowhere on a pump. ASSEMBLY PART NUMBERS rarely, if ever, are found on AIR pumps

Good info Joe. It will then be pertinent to take notice of the external configuration looking at any pumps in question. With my '75 being such a late build, obviously a 7817809 could be dated such that if I went by date code I could find the wrong pump. I will post photos of the '75 pump when the current owner forwards them along.
