Carb Air cleaner for 1955 Corvette V*

I am looking for an air cleaner for a 1955 Corvette V8. I have been for weeks looking on line but no lucky in finding one. I know it is a sealed unit, Chrome. I don't know if there is a replacement for the sealed unit?

go to ebay and you will find air cleaners listed under 1955 corvette air cleaners. the reproductions are excellent except for the flame retard material. 55 has a smooth surface on the bottom, 56 has a egg shaped depression on the bottom.

I must have an incorrect Carb for my 1955 Corvette. My carb requires egg shaped depression and is a Carter WCFB 2218S or atleast that is what the tag states.

a 2218s does not require the egg shape depression. a 2218s is the carb with a bellcrank located on the driver's side toward the firewall.do you have the correct air cleaner? the correct air cleaner is recessed on the bottom to provide some clearance. to compare your carb with another 2218s look at the one for sale on ebay which can be found under "1955 corvette carburetor". if you are able to post a picture of the engine compartment , forum members could help you correct items. usually after #400 i would expect to see the carburetor without the bellcrank, but data you have been posting on motor seems to be correct, so maybe a 2218s was used.

it was common practice to take an original 55 air cleaner needing re-chrome plating and cut the one piece air cleaner in two, allowing for the chrome plating process.. my 55 underwent the same seperation years ago. once they are cut apart, its difficult if not impossible to re-join the two dismembered pieces and not damage the chrome. i simply install the two pieces and take a minor deduct. mike

              Mike,

What material did you use within the air cleaner to filter the air?

i would also use the two pieces rather than buy a new one. a problem people found after they openned a 55-56 air cleaner is many though they could locate a filter to place inside the two pieces. problem is that 1.5" to 1.75" filters in that size do not seem to exist. the two inch filters are too thick. as for the problem of rebending the lip on a old cover after it has been rechromed, i have been told that the use of copper in filling in imperfections contribute to the new chrome becoming more brittle and prone to cracking when the edge of the top cover is rebent over the lower plate.

does your air cleaner still have the flame arrestor material and the arrestor retainer secured to the top cover? if the retainer is no longer on the top cover you will have problems just using the steel mesh that was originally in the air cleaner. when tightening the wing nut there will be no support. a correct steel mesh ring can probably be purchased from Rodger Roberts who is reproducing the air cleaners.

I have not had any luck in finding a filter to fit the two pieces. The top of the air cleaner is cut right at the base. I have no matterial to bend over the bottom. The bottom of mind has the egg depression, but not needed.

hardware store wire mesh pads. tell em you burnt your wifes favorite cast iron skillet( a Griswold # 13 worth a grand) and ya need a wire brush to clean it before she gets home. i stuffed about 5 of the wire mesh pads between the upper and lower pieces and put on carb with wingnut holding the bubba mess together. mike
