    62 Stamp pad surface finish

Good afternoon, The stamp pad surface finish on my 62 327 is "rough and pitted" . Is there anything I can do to enhance this to get less points taken off my score. Thank you Joe

Not really, but there are many things you can do to make it more likely to lose points!!!

Is there a chemical that I can use to clean it off a bit that won't hurt the markings?

There is no forgiveness in judging the components of the stamp pad....It's all or nothing for each component.

            Assembly Stamping= 25 points Vin Derivitive= 25 points Pad Surface= 38 points

At Texas Regional Judges used a scope magnifier and also took pictures to magnify pad to 8-1/2 x 11 sheet

I thought the standard was TFP, not authentication as original....Guess not

I got dinged the whole ball of wax. So be it, not here to rock the boat. I just want to jump through the hoops like in school. I was thinking that maybe there is a chemical like mineral spirits that will clean it up a little without causing a problem.

As long as there's no paint on it, an undecked pad should have enough decent surface for an experienced judge to be able to determine if the broach marks are present.

Absolutely do not use anything abrasive on the surface, and that includes mild abrasives like Bon Ami or Bar Tender's Friend. Have someone who knows his stuff look at it before you do anything.

If the surface is heavily rusted, you might try Naval Jelly. Try it on a test piece of stock first. If you use it on the stamp pad, follow directions but dilute it and let it sit for 1/2 the recommended time before removing and neutralizing with soapy water.

                  Joe,
Mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, acetone, gas, kerosene or any other solvent will not affect the metal surrface it will just help remove grease paint or any other non metallic coatings.
Just use a rag or soft brush, no abrasives, wire brushes etc.

An old tooth brush is the perfect tool to use with a little mineral spirits or paint remover.
