Recently my 69 350 automatic failed to start. I eventually traced it to a faulty neutral start switch. But my first guess was a bad solenoid on the starter because I thought I heard what sounded like a spring being sprung when I turned the key to the start position, and coming from the general direction of the starter. However, the sound, a sort of "thung" was actually coming from somewhere inside the console, loudest toward the front behind the radio. It was not the starter solenoid as the S terminal was not getting any juice at all. Perhaps I'd just never heard this sound before over the noise of the engine starting, or perhaps it was a symptom of the bad nsw. Curious what this sound could be, what's back up in the console that would make a "thung" noise when the key is turned to start.

Re: Noise from Console (C3)
Could the sound be coming from the ignition switch (not the key but the switch) located on the steering column? After I removed the steering column on my '69 to take out the instrument panel and re-installed, the switch was misadjusted causing a no start situation. When I turned the key I remember hearing a similar sound. Just a thought.

Re: Noise from Console (C3)
I put my ear up against the console and that's definitely where the noise is coming from. Sounds like releasing a compressed spring. Its curious, but since there are no other apparent problems with the car, I guess I'm just not curious enough to dismantle the console to find what it is.- Top
