Finger tight/snug is all. No tools needed.

I loosened the cable a couple little turns behind the speedometer and guess what? It is fixed. No more screeching sound or no more speedometer needle jumping around. I cannot believe it. It was just to tight. Dutch

        Dutch -

That says that the ferrule crimped on the speedo head end of the cable (which prevents the cable from being removed from the casing from the transmission end) was slightly mis-located, placing an axial load on the first worm and magnet when the cable nut was tightened.

          Dutch,
I got under the dash on my 65 coupe a few weeks ago just to see if I could loosen it to possibly lubricate it.
I got it loose and then had a difficult time getting my hand out.
Had to stop, take a few deep breaths and relax. While doing that I wondered how while laying half in and half out of the car I could get my cell phone out of my right pocket with my left hand. No way.
After relaxing, my hand came out sort of easily....
I'll lubricate it some other time.

Bruce, I am glad you did not have to cut off your hand to get your arm back. I had purchased 12 inch needle nose pliers just for this project. This made it easier. Dutch

Kable Ease. White Lithium Grease, powdered graphite lubricant

                  Dale,
I like white lithium grease and I have heard that vaseline works well.

Same herre, I just wanted to confirm. I am replacing my Speedometer cable, it was routed incorrectly and got the outside insullation cut. Thanks
