    '62 Finned Harmonic Balancer

    Hi all,

I'm wondering if the '62 8" finned harmonic balancer for a '62 327 Corvette would work on a 283, or is too heavy? It weighs like 15 pounds.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I would not even consider using it on a 283, although its weight would not figure into that decision. For one thing, it would not be tuned for such an engine. For a second thing, it was designed to be used with crankshafts with balancer bolt provisions. No 283 has such provisions (unless it's been added).

In general, harmonic balancers are specific to engine application and are among the parts that I would be very reluctant to interchange outside of GM's original usage. For example, the L-71/L-72 balancer appears absolutely identical to the L-88 balancer but the balancers are tuned differently. How is this done? I don't know. The various components of both balancers are the same.

Whay would you want to put that damper on a 283 .Spining weight is important and it would double the weght at a distance much bigger. The 283 was not drilled in the front. The damper is also worth alot.

62 340 and 360 hp cars came with 8" balancers. It was not until some time about halfway through the model year that the began to drill and tap the crank and put a bolt in. I have an Interorganizational Memo to that effect. So...were they "designed" to be used with crankshaft bolts, or were crankshaft bolts designed to deal with problems with 8" balancers? I guess the latter, but there would be many with greater knowledge than mine!!
