    1960 Tire Board

Attached is a photo of the 5-ply tire board that was in my car when I purchased it in 1989. Notice that the bottom of the board has been sawed off. Is that another instance of bubba damaging an original part? Or is different because a 5.5" rim and tire were originally stored in the wheel well?

Could someone post a photo of an original tire board cut out and provide the measurements of the cut out?

    Re: 1960 Tire Board

Joe, Got your email and posted here since the measurement that I used were from another thread. I also made my board and used the measurements for the cutout provided by Bill Mashinter in the link below. That link also has some original boar photos.I have no complaints about fitment of the board to the trunk latch and the mat. My only complaint is that when I made my board, i of course centered the hole for the hold-down bolt, however the hole in the spare tire well is not centered so I had to modify my board to fit the hole. Some pictures attached

Joe, I added a picture of what is supposed to be an original trunk board, the black painted trunk in my post above.

Thanks Donald for the link and the images. If I follow Bill's cutting instructions, will a horizontal line drawn through the bolt hole represent the first line he references?

It looks like the cut out on your trunk mat mirrors the board cuts on the left and right with a 1/4" - 3/8"of the board exposed at the top.

I laid out all the lines before I cut or drilled anything. But, yes essentially what I did was draw a centerline through the bolt hole.

            Joe,

Regarding the cut out and the trunk mat, the fit is actually better at the top than you stated. The mat was a little forward so I pulled it back into place an there is very little board showing even at the top. Mind you, this was dumb luck. I finished the board well before I had a mat. I kept waiting for Al Knoch to make them again, but gave up and ordered one from Corvette Central. It came in a Romeo Corvette box!

One thing I do remember now is that I marked the board according to Bill's measurements, but I cut it well inside the lines then test fitted the board in the car to make sure the cutout was going to fit the trunk latch, then adjusted and finished the cut out.
