    1970 Steering Column (Non Tilt)

    Hi All,

I need to get an original non tilt steering column for my June 1970 built LT1. Is this the same as a 71 steering column? Are there any late 1970 deviations or dates that I should be looking for when trying to find a good standard column?

    Any who rebuilds these?

    Thanks,
    Dave

    David,
I believe the differences are in the attaching accessories: such as emergency flasher button style, signal stalk design, horn button design. Otherwise should be the same.

      Warren and Dave-----

Turn signal levers were the same from 1969 through 1971. I believe that the flasher button style was the same through 1971, also, but changed for 1972. The horn button was the same from 1969 to 1976. The lock cylinders were keyed differently for 1969 and 1971 so that would have to be changed but one would probably do that anyway even if one got a column from the same year. I can't think of any other differences between the 1969-71 non-tele columns.

As far as who rebuilds these columns, the only one I knew of was Corvette Steering Service. However, since the sudden and untimely death of the owner, I don't know if they're still in business. Their website no longer works.

            Dave,
Send a PM or an email to Jim Shea, he is a member here and used to work for Saginaw -- the makers of our steering components. Direct him to this thread so that he responds on the board for all of us to see. He has been more than helpful in the past, but I haven't seen him on here lately. I hope he is OK.

Re: 1970 Steering Column (Non Tilt)

I have reviewed the four different part number steering column assembly drawings that were used from late 1969 through 1976.
              The part numbers are:
              7807890 Late 1969-1970
              7810656 1971-1972
              7815668 1973-1974
              7818920 1975

The basic structure, length, diameters, etc are all the same between all of the years. The lock housing part number changed after 1970. But the steering column assembly drawing does not reflect any differences. I seem to recall that the angle or size of the cast lock arrow on the housing may be a little different from one supplier or from one year to another. Again, the lettering does not show up on the assembly drawings.

There is a paper label at about 12 o'clock with the part number and the alpha code TO. It is located about 9 to 10 inches up from the lower bearing. The alpha code stayed the same for all years even though the actual part numbers changed.

There is also a five character date code that was roll stamped on the lower steering column jacket.
The first three characters are the day of the year (001 to 365)
The fourth character was the shift designation (A, B, or C)
The fifth character was the last digit of the year (2 for 1972 etc)

The date code should be located about 7 inches up from the lower bearing at about 7 o'clock.

I can't speak for turn signal levers, hazard knobs, ignition lock cylinders or other parts that installed on the column at St. Louis and were Chevrolet release responsibility.

I am very sure that all of the above standard steering columns will interchange.

              Jim

Going through your NCRS Driveline I believe you will find more information that you are seeking about your 70's steering column.
