    68 Starter Heat Shield

I have a starter judging question cause I am tired of replacing my over heated starter and solenoid. I would like to add the starter solenoid heat shield to my trim tagged 8 March car. The new judging manual, page 93, says that these shields were added to the production line on28 March 1968. Sounds like a pretty firm date?????? I know it has been stated that actualproduction often lagged the introduction of an AIM change but would I be zinged for this shield with an AIM production change dated 5 March 1968, just a few days prior to my car?

    Dale,
If you are refering to the 90 degree bend sheet metal shield in front of the solenoid, my early (nov '67) 68 has it. I've owned the car since '71 and it has always been there. About 1/32" sheet metal painted black. It is identical to a 67 model.

      Dale,
See TSB 68-T-66. That is where that date came from. That TSB is in the back of your fourth edition TIM&JG, and includes a drawing of the components.

BTW: That heat shield is for the solenoid and wiring harness. It will do little or nothing to prevent heat transfer to the starter motor itself. Unfortunately, I will have to leave advice about the starter heating to others.

        Re: 68 Starter Heat Shield

        Hi Dale,

I currently have the heat shield on my December '67 built '68. I believe it was on the car when I purchased it. (Don't believe I bought one) I decided to keep it on as it may help save that area from extreme heat damage. I did not lose any points for having it at regional or national judging. I believe the judges realize its' value.

I see you have a 427 engine. The shield on the 427 is a curved stainless steel shield. I have one from GM in the box i never used part # 3943647

Dale my original owner 1968 Corvette 327/350 L79 still has it's factory installed starter heat shield. Built in February 19,1968 with G19 on the trim tag.

The one I was talking about using was the in the AIM, see attached. Can you get this one in reproduction? Paragon has one but looks more rounded than this boxed picture one. How about the timing isuue? Ralph could it look like that Paragon one? I'll try and get a picture of it.

Just got the new JM and saw what you were talking about as to the SB 68 t 66. Still could a shield be acceptable on my 8th car if the mod was on going from a change dated 5 Mar? I guess I should not care if it helps my car. Alot of things were happening around the time of my car, like the underdash braces. Terry B. sounds like you and I are are the same page, as to doing the car good.

Dale, I am assUming you got the 5 March date from the AIM revision date since the TSB states "This condition has been corrected in production effective March 28, 1968." The revision date in the AIM is the date the drawing was revised. Depending on the type of revision this AIM date can be before or after the production change, but in this case we have a definitive production change date. I don't see how you can generate any wiggle room on that.

My suggestion: Install the heat shield and drive the s*&^ out of your Corvette. Before you bring it for judging -- remove the heat shield. Problem solved, or is that too simple?

As to past judging -- this is a revision to the TIM&JG. That was then and this is now!

Jim T, This is a large motor issue. It does not involve small blocks.
