In the judging sheets under "pedals and under instrument panel" there is no mention of the brake light switch. However every time I watch the judges they ding the owner for having a plastic one. The original one is silver cad and has dark brown bakelite. does anyone have a picture of one? It says delco remy in the bakelite. I found one that is silver cad but has BLACK BAKELITE. Will putting that one in save my points or just keep the plastic one. And how do they determine how many points? Thank you Joe

Re: Brake light switch
Joe, the point deduct is will be taken on configurition, finish, and date. so deduct 60 percent of the value given for the plastic switch.I am not sure on the C1 switch plating but there may have been a few types as my metal Delco Remy switch is a gold color.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Brake light switch
Hay guys, Jim it's for the red one your right, and Edward I hope they are kind if i get the other one. Ruedi, you got it, that's the one i'm looking at. It's got black bakelite instead of dark brown but I am inclined to get it because it just looks better then plastic. The judges go bat s$&*( when they see plastic. Can someone look at the link Ruedi sent and give me your valued opinion. Thank again JoeLast edited by Joseph P.; November 22, 2012, 11:52 AM.- Top

Re: Brake light switch
Joe - The description of the original brake (stop lamp) switch is interesting, e.g., silver cad with a dark brown Bakelite back. I trust it's from the 61 TIM&JG. The Oct 1966 Chevrolet Parts & Accessories Catalog lists the following applications: 61-65 CORVETTE, p/n 1993509
I checked the 3 NOS examples I have and all of them have a medium brownish finish (gold?) on the metal portion and a black Bakelite back. Granted these are GM SERVICE Delco-Remy parts but it's interesting that the one example discussed and the eBay listing are consistent with the example I have as far as the finish colors are concerned. But whatever the finishes are if p/n 1993509 is the "correct" part, it is not white plastic.

Re: Brake light switch
Hi Pete, The description comes from the judging guide. But they don't have any pictures and I don't believe they would be in color anyway. I'm with you I think anything other then plastic would be good. I put in a bid and we'll see how it goes. Thank you for your attention to this and for your time. Joe- Top

Re: Brake light switch
Agree with Peter L. --- here's one I pulled off a '65 Chev junkyard donor (left), and an NOS unit, next to its box. Bakelite is black in both cases.Attached Files- Top

Re: Brake light switch
NOS examples that I have of the 1993509 are identical to these, too. I believe that the finish seen on the barrel component of these switches is a very typical and unique finish for Delco Remy parts, especially switches and is seen on many of the period. It is subtly (or, maybe, not so subtly) different from this type of finish (zinc or cadmium with chromate overplate) seen on other parts. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Brake light switch
I got one off of e-bay a couple of days ago. The one that was pictured and the one I got were two different things. The one in the picture was cad and the threads were not painted.. The one I got was painted black and dulled out and the threads were painted. Best part; he's a member. I am going to see if he does the right thing and stands behind the part. It's not a lot of money but it's the principal of the thing.- Top

The one under the orange pad was on E bay and the black one was the one I recieved. Showed it to a judge here and he said to send it back. Pretty shady seller in my opinion.- Top

Re: Brake light switch
Joe, E/bay sellers will sometimes try and pull things like this, show one part and send you something else. If he is a honest seller he should pay your shipping cost or send you one like the picture.I had this happen to me on a front emblem for my 63. he showed a Trim parts bag and emblem, but when I got the part it was another made in china emblem and the colors were not correct and not as pictured. Its happened to me a couple of times.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top
