67 Air Car Heater/AC control lighting

I just took my car apart to replace these lamps. I found one with the green filter on it. Looking at parts catalogs (like Long Island) they indicate that some cars have all three with green filters.

Can't really tell from the AIM.

    Any help appreciated.

PS - 2 of the three had the plastic bases in the sockets melted. Can't figure out how that would happen. They are only 3 watt bulbs. Not much heat going on there. Has anyone else encountered that?

Steve, if my memory serves me correctly, 3 is the correct #. A word of caution, the replacement green covers will tear very easily and were a little troublesome getting on the metal shields to cover all holes in the shields. The melt-downs sound like there may have been a short to ground in the wiring at the holder or possibly inside the holder itself resulting from a poor fit between the bulb and the socket. I would buy a new lighting harness for the switches, rather than repair the existing one. Good luck!! Al

Re: 67 Air Car Heater/AC control lighting

I've just pulled the Heater/AC dash lamps from my car. The 2 added by AC are identical (same part number) according to the AIM. These are located at 4 and 8 o'clock around the clock mounting. The third one is mounted below the clock at the 6 o'clock posistion. I can't find a part number for that one. That means of the 2 lamps added by AC one points up and one points down. The bottom lamp also points down, illuminating what?

The real question is why does Long Island and others show 2 or 3 types of lamp shields and my car has all 3 the same.

I'm just trying to get all the backlighting to look correct. Also my car only has one green filter and thats at the 8 o'clock position, and I really can't tell its green durning testing.

I attached a picture form the LI catalog as well as the 3 from my car.

        Steve -

Actually, the two "torpedo" lamp hoods added on an A/C car are different; see your Assembly Manual, section C60, sheet E8, item #4 - shows both part numbers (3960507 LH and 3960508 RH). When correctly installed, they emit light upwards, illuminating the upper two A/C control knob bezels (the single one at 6 o'clock illuminates the lower two knob bezels). Each of the three lamp hoods has the light "window" oriented differently relative to their fixed mounting clip, which is why there are three part numbers.

AIM is at garage and I forgot to look at it today. I must have looked at that page a million times and never saw different part numbers. Yet another mystery as to why my car has 3 of the same.

Does the lower unit have 2 slots in it emitting light out either side or just the one point down?

My plan is to machine up the ones I have to get what I need.

The hood on the center one at 6 o'clock (see photo below) has two "windows" (one on each side) so it emits light from both sides, directly at the lower two knob bezels.

Are there any pictures of that hood that shows both windows? Is the other window in the same place as the one shown on the other side?

Yes, the window you can't see is diametrically opposite from the one that's visible in the photo.

Thanks again John. I finally see where the AIM calls out 2 part numbers using a dash. Never noticed that before. Since I have 3 of the same I'm going to try and machine new slots in 2 of the hoods.

Last question is the green lens. Again my car only had one. Do you know how many and on which controls?

Each "torpedo lamp" (one without A/C, three total with A/C) got a green lens, so all bezels had a greenish hue when illuminated.
