    A/C Compressor Rebuild?

Thanks to recommendations from people on this board I've found a local shop to get my a/c operational. When I bought the car I was told that all it needed was a charge. In talking with the seller over the weekend it turns out that no actual work was done other than to put the components back on when the rebuilt engine was nstalled. So basically I have a system that hasn't ran in over 25 years as the car sat in storage. I'm not very knowledgable on a/c. Should I consider having the compressor rebuilt prior to getting the system worked on as a precaution rather than waiting to see if it is working order?

    Thanks,
    Glen

Do you know if the system was open to the elements, or was it closed and just had no charge?

You definitely need to have the A6 seals replaced--shaft seal and forward/rear case o-rings. While it's apart, the gut-pack can be given a good cleaning and inspection for problem wear.

I would hope that the local shop you found would give you some good advice as to getting your A/C working. Are you going to specify R12 or R134? I removed the engine in my 1970 and was able to leave the A/C hoses connected and a working A/C system when bolted onto the engine again. If your system was disconnected and lost the R12 I would recommend replacing the dryer and having the local shop person add oil for the the dryer replacement, not much is needed. If the compressor is disconnected from hoses, you could remove it and drain the oil from it and replace the correct amount.

          Glen:

Is this for your 1972 car?? Need to know what year car to address your question properly. Also, do you intend to use R12 or R134a?? This info is also needed.
