Rearview Mirror Adjustment on a 72

My rearview mirror will not stay in position. Looking at the AIM I see that there is a retainer behind the cover. Do I just need to tighten the retainer screw or will I actually need to bend the retainer a bit to get enough riction to hold the bracket in place? Also does the cover simply pop off? I wanted to be sure befor I started prying on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Glen

Glen, the glass can be removed very easily, and there is a ball and socket, I cannot remember if there is something there to tighten, If not take a center punch and make a couple punch marks in it to tighten. be sure to lay mirror on something soft to do this.

If you take a blow dryer and heat up the rubber gasket around mirror this will aid in removel.

      Ed,

Thanks. This is the interior rearview mirror and it doesn't stay in place where the ball at the top of the bracket (arm) closest to the windshield is behind the plastic cover. Would I still need to use a punch once I have the cover removed?

      Thanks,

      Glen

Glen I think if you rotate the socket into the area where the ball is normally sits and put a couple if punch marks this will help, I forgot about the upper ball and socket. maybe you could take a sharpe and mark the ball before you take the mirror off so you'll know wher to make the punch marks.

          Hi Glen,
I believe Edward's suggestion will do the job, but if it doesn't I found that putting some more bend in the retainer (as you suggest) does tighten up on the bracket's pivot ball and stops the mirror from drooping. The retainer is item #14 in the AIM's Inside Mirror sheet.
          Regards,

Also check the mounting bracket check the area where the retainer has the 2 bent tails go through the bracket have seen one of the horizontal section cracked and detached on one side thus causing the retainer to be loose.

Glen I don't have a fix for your inside read view mirror, however on my 68 the original inside rear view mirror does not move down on its own when I drive, it moves up. A light tap with a finger makes it usable again.
