    C3 Steering wheel

    Hi
C3 steeing wheel, fits '69-'75, black 3 spoke, has a SS band that goes around the outside. The band is coming loose, is there a way to fix that?

    Thanks

Although I've never had any experience with this happening and while I've never "dissected" one of these wheels, I believe the "band" is actually the perimeter of the frame of the wheel. I think you have a situation in which the hard rubber component of the wheel is separating from the frame. I do not know how it could be repaired but someone else here might.

I did some further checking and now I don't think that the stainless "band" on the perimeter of the 69-75 steering wheel is part of the frame. Although, as I mentioned, I've never actually had one of these wheels apart, I always assumed that this "band" was part of the steering wheel frame. However, just for the heck of it, I did an electrical continuity check between the spokes and the perimeter "band" and found that there's no continuity. This pretty much says that the band is not connected to the frame. So, I would have to conclude it's ornamental. I still have no idea how to fix it, though.

I appreciate your efforts. I was at a show some time back and someone mention there is a process that the band can be reattached. Just trying to figure out how it can be done. The factory attached some how, so I got to believe there has to be a wat to do it. If there is a will, there is a way. I hope I did that right. Grammer was not my best subject.

I am actually disappointed by what I discovered here. If the "band" had actually been the perimeter of the frame, the steering wheel would be a lot stronger. Now that I know that the band is just ornamental it "cheapens" my opinion of the steering wheel. However, it may very well be that the design and construction of the wheel was dictated by crash standards that came into force for the 1969 model year. It may be that the plastic component of the wheel is designed to separate from the frame under certain impact.

I've never had any trouble with any sort of separation of the "band" on my original owner 1969. The plastic is worn smooth in a few areas but the integrity of the wheel is perfect. I'm all set if it ever fails, though. Over the years I've collected NOS examples of this wheel whenever I found them and I currently have three [none for sale]. So, I figure if I live to be 300 I'll have enough wheels.

            Hey Joe

If you live to be 300 years old, you and Adam will have something in common. Adam and his wife had a kid when he was 100 years old. You could set a new record.
I don't know the reason for the design of the steering in 69, but I have seen bent wheels so that tells me there is a metal in the plastic rim.

            Thanks
