    Muncie synchro mods.

Hi all, I remember reading about an old way to make Muncies shift quicker. Making it somewhat like a dog box.I think Clem Z. had some input on the subject.I would love to know more about it.
And no, I'm not doing it to mine but would like to learn.
    Thanks, Graeme.

Yes Clem, that's it. Does it make the shifts faster and do you have a photo of the machined synchro?
      Cheers, Graeme .

no photos and it was to allow you to shift faster with less chance of missing the gear. it was called "slick shift"

          Clem,

A friend at work had a 63 Impala with a built 327 that he used to street race. He did the mod you mention to his car. He said that there would only be six to eight inches between black marks when he really got after it in first and second gear. He claims he never lost a race after making the mod. When racing, he didn't even bother with the clutch. He mentioned that the bad side to the mod is that you can't downshift without grinding the gears.

He needed to learn the fine art of "double clutching". I learned to drive on a farm truck that had no synchro's and in fact am restoring a pickup right now with none.

This is a mod that I wouldn't even consider for a street application. Among many other things, it drastically decreases the long term durability of the transmission.

...and the ability to downshift is one of the principal reasons that there exist synchronizers in a transmission!

Yeah slick shifter mods, used to be done 35+ years ago, it didn't do anything to strengthen the trans though. Once you start putting real power to them and hammering them they will come apart. Same with the BW T10 and ST-10's. After I built my son a 12-bolt IRS he stopped breaking the 10-bolt vette diffs and broke (3) ST-10's just like hitting a egg with a hammer. He had Liberty Gear build him a face plated Tremec and that works like the slick shifters did, power shift it at the track. I didn't think it would work out on the street but he doesn't have a problem and he knows how to double clutch, learned to drive stick on my 69 when he was about 14 or 15.

Thanks Clem and others for your responses.I was interested for a friends car that is raced and rules demand using the synchro box. Sounds good for upshift but not downshifts. We won't be going that way.
                    Cheers, Graeme from OZ.
