    BF Goodrich 255X50 16VR tires ?

Are the new 255X50 16VR tires which BF Goodrich recently brought back into production made in the USA ?

Also, I recently heard that Good Year will soon reintroduce their 255X50 16VR tires. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so, what the timing might be?

If you're talking about the BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2 in 255-50-16, the information I have says the tire is made in the USA.

Just bought a set of BFG Comp 2 Radials for my '86 Coupe in August. So far they've been fabulous. Much quieter and a better ride than my previous tires and would recommend them highly. Had a hard time finding replacement tires for this car as few are offered for 16" wheels in the 255-50-16 size. Settled on these and really glad I did. Purchased from local Discount Tire store. Very happy with them.

        Mel:

Are your new BFG tires made in the USA? Also, can you measure the tread width and let us know the actual tread size?

        Thanks,

        P.

Unfortunately car is now in storage and I wont be back there for another couple weeks. I havent measured them but will say tread seems a bit narrower... though not substantially so.. and ride is so much better I'm OK with them. Tread design is good and they also seem to track much better on the highway. Probably because my old ties were...well... old. When I get back there I will measure and reply... but I'd bet you wont be disappointed with width.

And, not sure if they were made in USA... not sure how you tell.

Worn tires have a thin layer of hardened tread rubber, which considerably decreases the damping of high frequency road input, so almost ANY new tire with full tread depth of fresh, resilient rubber will offer improved ride quality over an old, worn tire because the former will damp out high frequency harshness.

The country of origin should be molded into the sidewall, but it doesn't really matter. The tire industry is world wide and some once-independent brands such as BFG and Dunlop are ownered by other companies that have plants all over the world. In the case of BFG, it's Michelin, and Dunlop is owned by Goodyear as of a few years ago after spending about 20 years with Sumitomo.

The most important parameters are speed rating and UTQG ratings. The wear rating of 340 is somewhat high for a Z-rated tire, but over the last 10-20 years, the industry has been able to develop high grip compounds that have much better wear characteristics than in the nineties.

Back in the nineties a group of owners sued Honda because the tires on their NSXs "wore out to soon". (I think they had a wear rating of 120 or 140.) At the time I occasionally saw a Honda USA exec, and I chided him that they needed to go a better job of educating their customers on what sports cars are about and told him that I rarely saw an NSX driven with any verve. The drivers were all slow-poke geezers who would have probably been better off in an Mercedes S-class diesel.
