I had the balancer rebuilt on my 67 327-300HP with A.C. When it arrived, the hub is offset from the outer ring toward the engine rather than toward the radiator. When it was sent in, I made a small chisel mark on the engine side for alignment purposes on both the outer ring to the hub. The rebuilder is telling me that the hub to ring offset should be facing the engine, not the radiator. I have another 300HP balancer that has the offset on the radiator side, as mine was. He said sometimes, the ring slips or pushes over in the opposite direction over time. I need a quick answer, so I can pass this on to him to night to try to get it back and installed by the weekend. THANKS!!! Al

Re: 327-300 balancer HELP 911 911
Al,
Do you have a photo or two?
Enclosed are 4 photos of an original 1966 balancer (6 1/8" dia.) stamped "6 E F" (1966, May, "F" might be the vendor) on the back side. I believe that it is GM # 3861970 (Mid-1966 and 1967).
The 59-61 and 62-65 250-300 H.P. balancers were "stepped" (front 4 1/2" dia,, rear 6 1/8" dia.). I have many in my collection.
The 68 balancer was also "stepped" (front 6 1/8" dia., rear 5 1/8" dia.). I have one in my collection stamped "4684" (GM # 3914684) and "C 8 F" (1968, March, "F").

Dave, my balancer is not stepped as shown in your pictures. It is the same diameter all the way across the ring, as is another 67, (I think) that I have. Do you have a 67 like this, that's not stepped, for comparison? Is the center hub on yours flush with either side of the outer ring or is it equally spaced to both sides?- Top

Re: 327-300 balancer HELP 911 911
Al,
I don't consider my 66 balancer to be "stepped".
Enclosed is a photo of an original 1959 balancer (GM # 3760584) that looks identical to the 1962-E1965 balancers. I also have some 1959-1961 balancers without the 12 holes around the perimeter.

Can you post a photo? Do the balancers look like the one in my drawing below?

The 1967 balancer ring is NOT stepped as in Dave's picture and diagrams below. It is flat across its entire width.
The 1967 balancers usually have the face of the hub displaced slightly forward of the face of the ring. I have never seen one spaced slightly rerarward. The crankshaft pulley needs to seat against the balancer hub. If the outer ring is displaced forward, the pulley will seat against the ring and not the hub. This could result in a pulley alignment problem. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 327-300 balancer HELP 911 911
Thanks Joe, I'm going to call the rebuilder shortly and inform him to re-do it with the ring flush with the hub on the engine side, as per my previous conservation with him. I wondered also if the pulley might have a fittment problem due to the ring being forward. Al- Top

I lost my instructions on how to post pictures and couldn't figure it out. Mine looks exactly like the pics that you posted above except for picture number 3. I don't recognize the rough cast section to the rear side on that picture.- Top

I don't know if the a/c hub was different but my 67, non-a/c, 300 is as Joe describes (FA7 stamped).- Top

Re: 327-300 balancer HELP 911 911
The C-60 and non-C-60 balancers were the same.
By the way, note the final balance weight in one of the ring's balance weight holes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
