C1 (1960) Clutch Pedal push rod location

I know this has been raised before and I think I know how it goes together based on searches and reading other threads, but I would appreciate conformation.

The first picture I have attached is from the 1960 Owners Manual and it shows the clutch pedal push rod with the bend oriented upward and the picture is labeled 'Clutch Linkage Adjustment (4 1/2" Pedal Travel Adjusment Shown)'.

I am getting closer to installing my engine and drive train and I will be installing the clutch linkage in the stock longer 6 1/2" travel position.

So I will install the push rod with the bend oriented down and the short end of the push rod at the clutch pedal. The push rod is approximately 18" long (see picture 2) and from the bend, one end is about 10", and the other is about 8", so that is what I am calling the short end.

I would really appreciate some confirmation on this

Do you a ST-12? There is a good explanation in there about the two ways to install the clutch rod. Not at home right now so I can't quote it for you.

Yes, I have the ST-12, but it just says if you are changing from the 6 1/2" to the 4 1/2" travel step 6 says 'Install clutch pedal push rod so the bend (as shown in Figure 7) is opposite direction from it previous installed position'.

What has me a little confused is that in the first page of the Clutch section 6R where it is describing the clutch and linkage operation for 58-62 and illustrated in Figure 2, the push rod has the bend up. Then on page 6R-4 where it describes the procedure to change to the shorter 4 1/2" travel, Figure 7 also shows the push rod bend up there also. I would have thought the first figure should have illustrated the stock 6 1/2" travel position, but both figures have the bend positioned up. Also, the AIM diagram is not much help, I can't really tell from it which way the bend should go.

      Thanks,

      Don

Don, Yes the ST12 is confusing.

Normal position the rod bend points down....i.e. Holds Water. If the bracket is setup for normal 6" throw, the rod will only fit that way.

Ref your ST12 diagram above, normally the bolt is in position "C". Moving it to "A" is the shorter 4 1/2" throw, and the relocated bracket requires the rod to be flipped. ST12 procedure here....http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...2csg06r04.html

When the bracket is changed the rod bend points up(Not Hold Water) as it won't fit in the firewall hole properly due to the different angle of the bracket.

When you install the rod through the firewall, if you have it the wrong way it will tell you.......It won't line up to the bracket correctly and you'll have to flip it.
