I've searched the archives and what I found only confused me further. Can someone please tell me what the glossness, or flatness, of the paint used for the dash side covers to the radio should be for a 1963? The color I am refering to is saddle tan. My covers seem to be too dark with too much metalic to be original. Do any venders sell a rattle can with the right shade and glossness for my needs?

Re: 1963 interior paint
Perry;
I repainted mine back in about 1976 using spray can dye and they have held up fine ever since. My color, however, is dark blue. I still have a number of cans around as I bought a set of kick panel speakers and also did the complete headliner and window frames om my hardtop. As I recall, I just lightly sanded the panels and sprayed them.

Re: 1963 interior paint
Perry, I had the same problem with my 63 saddle interior. After buying some cans from the major parts suppliers I came across Tower Paint and Decorating. They are at P.O. Box 2345, Oshkosh, WI 54903. 920-235-6520.
I called them and told them my problem. They said they had the formulas for the original lacquer paint. They said they would mix what I needed and place it in a spray can. It was $19.95 for the paint and $7.95 shipping. It turned out to be a perfect match, so I redid everything in the interior (radio side panels, steering column, kick panel strips, windshield trim, etc) except the dash as that was OK. The lacquer goes on very thin, so several coats were needed, no runs, no drips and no errors.
This was in 2003. check to see if they are in business and give them a call. Let us know as I need to get another can. I need it to spray the jack tub and tool tub.

Re: 1963 interior paint
Thanks Harry. I will call them tomorrow. My car has different sheens of the saddle color. The doors and other fiberglass parts seem to be dull or flat while the windshield moldings and halo parts are glossy.Stuart, I looked at the spray dyes from Corvette Central. I might talk to them as well. Thanks, Perry- Top

We have to assume that all other medium saddle interior parts (ie. 36 gal tank covers) use Dupont 95355; RM 62C82 (both need flattening) or Ditzler DL-22298 (no flattening).
----------------------------------
In 1965, there were several different formulas and gloss levels, and for Ditzler, on the back of their color chip chart, they say which goes where. Example: Low gloss "Medium Dark Saddle" on Instrument Panel, Windshield Lower Garnish, Radio Speaker Screen, Heater Outlet Panel, Seat and Jack Stowage Wells.
Low gloss black on Directional signal housing, Mast jacket, Steering wheel hub, steering column escutcheon, Glove box frame, linkage cover panel inner (not sure what that one is).
Another paint code of medium saddle was used on Headliner, Rear compartment inner area, linkage cover panel outer (?)
Full gloss used on: Windshield side and upper garnish mounlings; upper garnish mouldings; halo panel; Hardtop garnish mouldings; door upper -- inner; kick panel retainer; lock pillar return flange and cap (inner) [?]
I had a '65 white/saddle convertible (back in 1968) and I'd swear that there were about 5 different shades / glosses on the various parts.- Top

Re: 1963 interior paint
I got ahold of Tower Paint on Monday. A nice lady by the name of Chris said she would look into the matter of mixing the Saddle Tan paint in lacquer for me. She called me back yesterday and said she could still do it. After talking with her for some time, it turns out she has the same formula that Wayne described in his post. There are two Diztler formulas, DL22299 and DL22298. The price went up to 21.95 plus shipping with no multiple order discounts other than for shipping. Since I had her on the phone and the fact that she was very helpful, I ordered 1 spray can. I know I could have gone to my local PPG paint supplier and had the same paint mixed there but I also know it would probably cost more. I recently had 1 pint of Ermine White paint mixed in acrylic laquer at a cost of $109. Ouch. Would have been $800+ for a gallon.- Top

Re: 1963 interior paint
Guys, Last year I finished up a restoration on a very original 63 Coupe with Saddle Tan interior. The car never left the family. I can tell you for certain that there were 2 completely different colors for the painted trim. None of those colors were the "Vinyl Dye" colors you can buy from the Corvette suppliers. I don't remember if it was a difference in color between the fiberglass parts and steel parts or if it was a difference in color depending on where the part was in the car. I do remember that the Radio side panels and the speaker grille were darker than the trim around the rear windows. I will have the car back in the shop in the spring but it is too far away right now to take a look. I may have more photos.
