More Black- Battery compartment/jack storage bin?

Was the battery compartment / jack storage bin painted black? If so, Semi-Flat similar to fire wall?

Also, I see adds for repo parts for the removable plastic bin located over the jack storage that states "sizes vary, check with NCRS judge for your year"- huh?

    Thanks again,
    Pat

Pat the Sems satin black works great. and the jack boxes I thought were pressed fiber board type material. The plastic ones are not correct.

Also notice how your jack and battery boxes are done if they have not been painted before, You willl see the they were slopply done and alot of incomplete area with no paint.

Here is an original tray out of a 69. It has been restored...

Check the AIM. For some model years, foil backed insulation was installed in the jack and battery compartments.

Thanks guys- great info. I will check my AIM to see if my car had foil backed insulation or a bin. If it calls for a bin, does anyone know who makes a reasonable version in the press-board material or are they all plastic?
              Thanks again,

The 1968-"early" 1969 COVERS (storage bins) were a little deeper than the "late" 1969-73. Just when the change-over occurred I don't know but I do know that my original owner September, 1969-built convertible had the early longer style. I believe the change to the slightly less deep covers was probably instigated by an interference between the bottom of the cover and the jack experienced with the longer style. No plastic covers were ever originally used for 1968 to at least 1973. I believe that the first use of the plastic cover was for the 1976 model year at the earliest. The plastic covers did become SERVICE for 1968+ at some point. To be honest, from a functionality standpoint, the plastic covers are far superior to the fiberboard.

I don't know of any current reproduction of the fiberboard cover although there could very well be one out there.

Pat, I As Joe states I have never seen a repro one either, other than the plastic ones. I have a friend that has a 69 and is still looking for one. We were in Carlisle this year and could not come up with one. If you see one, grab it. its a hard part to come by no matterr what year your looking for. They can be repaired so don't pass on one that maybe have the top surround missing pieces.

....and if you get one, I would not use it for day-to-day use. Keep it stored away for judging purposes only and use the plastic cover for day-to-day.

You could check with Norm Werner normwernersparts.com he had a couple of them on his web site the last time I was on there. It's been a while but worth a try. As Joe said a plastic one is best for day to day use. I have a plastic one loaded with tools and I drop it in place when I take the car for a drive. The original sits in a box in storage.

                        Hi Pat,
Paragon lists a fiberboard 'tray' (bin) in their cataloge. The description doesn't indicate the depth though.
                        Worth a call?
                        Regards,

I believe that 1968 trays also had rubber bumpers attached either part or all of the model year

I know for sure that the deeper style storage bin was used till 1972 and maybe later then that. Have re-flocking many 1969 thru 1972 storage bin and they are the same depth. I have 3 here at the house a 1970 to 2 late 1971's for 1972 cars and they are the same depth as Capt. Donnally's. The Capt is also correct that 1968 and have seen several 1969 with rubber bumpers one 1969 I recall was a late Jan or Feb build.
