    67 engine question

I have owned a 67 that came with the wrong engine for 28 years. I have a couple of questions.

    1. The engine it came with has the following stamped on its block FIOI9HT 6104493. I thought it said it was a 1966 engine built in 1965, but I really do not know. I am not even sure it came in a corvette.

    2. The car's production date is 12/20/1966. I have found a 427 435 but it has a build date of May 1967. Should I put it into my car?

    3. If I don't put the engine in #2 in the car what should I think about putting into it. A Chevrolet engine? A Summit built engine? I am truly open and asking?

    Thank you in advance!

    Re: 67 engine question

Ted, The big block sounds like fun, since the car does not have a matching numbers engine, does it really matter? Its your choice.

The engine you have is a 66 flint block, I believe its a corvette engine but the serial no. does jive its a early build vin. HT was a 327/350hp.

      Ted,

Was your car originally a big block car or a small block car? Do you know which engine option it had? I would suggest matching the engine to the car. What are your goals for the car? If it's NCRS judging, I think you're best served by a Corvette engine that matched what was originally in the car (correct casting number, casting date up to six months before engine build date, good broach marks, stamp on pad matches car except for VIN derivative). But hey, it's your car after all.

Ted, Maybe someone can give some clues about what to look for in your car that might indicate it was born with a big block. If you decide to change, you should advertise the old engine in the driveline. It's from a November 1965 built car, L79, 4 speed, no AC. Someone reading it might have the car it was born in. Good luck with it whatever you decide to do. Mike

          Re: 67 engine question

          Ted,

The one obvious thing if it was a BB would be the hood, then if it has a rear sway bar.

It doesn't look like a BB from your profile picture, although it's a very small picture. Looks like my 67 SB, Marina Blue convertible.

If it has a small block hood, you'll probably have to get a phony BB hood to match. There is probably too many 67 SB's converted to BB's out there. Your fellow NCRS members would give you a laugh.

My advice would be to look for a SB engine close to your VIN with a 7 leading, and a date stamp beginning with a V.

But it is your car, and you can do what you want.

            Re: 67 engine question

Thank you all. Someone tried to tell me this engine was not from a corvette.

Yes, my vette was a 427 435, tri power. The numbers on the transmission, rear end and tach all tell us this. It has a heavy duty 427 sway bar, 1/2 shaft axle, 427 HO caps and 7 leaf spring.

The engine area has all been changed along with the smaller side pipes.

I have been the keeper of this car for 28 years and want to care for it as best I can. Some day I will probably have to sell it. When I do I want to have made the changes that will make it more valuable, but would only want to sell it to someone who really understood what it was and would care for it properly. This car has given us some real great memories!

So from what I have read so far, I need to keep looking for a 427 dated up to 6 months earlier than December 1966. Is that correct?

Your HT engine code is a 350 hp 327 4 speed hi-lift cam 4-BBL.The date code is on the back of the block. It will be like D127 which would be April 12 1967.

                Ted-----

Yes, that's correct. Finding the pieces you need will be expensive but it's the best way to restore the car. I would not go so far as to re-stamp the block. I'd settle for correctly numbered and correctly dated components.

The hood had been replaced and is incorrect. Everything else is correct.

Was the original hood molded or layered?

                    It was a press-molded piece.

                      Joe, Ted,

That is amazing to me. Why would someone change a BB hood to a SB hood?

Ted, I'm sorry I assumed your car was not a BB from the outside appearance. Looks like you have it together as a BB, from the other chassis features of a BB.

But I guess stranger things have happened.
